Direct Cremation

Employees were great to deal with at the "shop" as well, even a year or two later when we had questions they were kind. I recall working with Jordan, so nice. I remember it being close to Easter and him commenting how that must be hard for us without our mom for the first time.

We went to pick up the ashes, that probably saved some money.

At $1,365 looks like they are better priced than the MD option due to the MD $500 additional fee.

This looks like a good option but they also have additional fees for the death certificate and other things the MD doesn't have so price compare.

Op your rates sound very similar to what I paid in a NYC suburb. What was weird is that the funeral home had something like a base $5000 price. After chatting for a while I mentioned to the funeral director that the person who died was waiting to get Medicaid but didn't qualify in time. They said " well, we can do direct cremation, but you'll need to do the paperwork yourself online." They used a different crematorium than the premium one and a cardboard casket to burn and cardboard box for ashes, which was fine since we were using a family urn. Came to closer to $2,000 total, and the online paperwork was basically the same as I would have filled out on paper at the funeral home, so actually easier to just input online.

I called Maryland Cremation -- they offered by far the best rate at $925. But there is a $500 charge for them to come out to Virginia. They are still the cheapest I have found.

The next cheapest is Northern Virginia Burial and Cremation Society and it would cost $1600-$1800 with them.

When another family member passed we did not have time to research and we ended up paying $4k for a simple cremation and cardboard box using a local place.

I will try to find some places in more rural Virginia, maybe.

Just wondering if they shared a reason why they prefer cremation over donation.

Why do they need a reason?

I don't know why and I have not pressed on the issue.

I’ve used Direct Cremation in Virginia twice. Both times they were amazing. One time was after midnight. Came right out.

I highly recommend!

NP here, but I would rather just return to dust (ashes) than be preserved. Especially to have health professional students learn on your remains. That may be useful for their careers, but I don't like the idea of it. My call.

recent death in DC, direct cremation of va would have been around $1800 with the additional fees for handling in DC and extra DC death certs.

the maryland cremation with the package of $925 also had a $500 fee to deal with picking up in DC, and from talking with them it seemed like they might have issues with middle-of-the-night pickups in DC

Legacy and Genesis took forever to call me back, and really had problems just telling me what the total cost would be.

I ended up going with Heaven Bound, despite cringing at the name. They were able to pick up at 3am after being called at 1am, and the fees were $1450 and included picking up at the residence. (A few firms have extra charges for picking up from any place but a hospital or morgue, most likely because they need to pay a third party to pick up immediately rather than depending on refrigeration.)

Is your family member in hospice? We asked the hospice folks and they gave us a list. There were some places that only offered cremation, which is what we wanted (this was during COVID and we did not want to hold a funeral).

The only extra charges were for extra death certificates and to expedite them. Also we bought a more expensive urn.
