China wasn't as bad as I thought it would be

Agreed. I’ve eaten at two McLean, Va restaurants where in one, roaches were crawling on the floor and in the other, mice were scurrying around the outdoor tables.

I've had several trips to China going back 20 years and generally enjoyed my time. The travel infrastructure is excellent and it's easy for independent tourists to move around on their own. There are things we could learn from China. But the Chinese government is indisputably despotic and a threat to global stability. I have less interest in going to China these days.

Of course they are. Look how close to our military bases they have put their country!

Agree with the bolded.
I prefer visiting Japan and South Korea. There’s no need to worry about saying the wrong things or taking the wrong photos.

There are just too many stories from there of tourists and people who traveled there for business coming back with tales that they felt they were being monitored. Like leaving their hotel room and having a sense there someone else has been in their room. There's also all sorts of risk that any of your technology that you bring will be infected with some kind of spyware so the govt can monitor you and steal all of your information. It's especially problematic for business travelers who might have all sorts of trade secrets on computers. It isn't unheard of for business people to have brand new computers and smart phones before traveling there that are competely wiped so that companies can limit corporate espionage.

I dunno, traveling to a country where I have to keep in the back of my mind that I'm potentially being followed, monitored, and having things in my room rifled through while I'm not.ij my room just seems ...... creepy.

I see. How do you feel about CBP’s unabridged rights to take peoples phones and search their communications at US airports? All good?
