U of SC was the only school on my DS's list surprised him with their admissions decision - we all thought he would have gotten in and he just did not (despite also demonstrated interest in an in person tour, an in person tour at a specialty major, etc). It's fine and he has committed to another school of course, but I think that school has gotten much more competitive.

He had 3.9 on a 4.0 scale or 5?

Did you submit test scores?

3.9 unweighted, was like 4.0 or 4.1 with weighted for honors, but at a school that most kids don't take all honors. No AP classes offered.
Test optional.
Strong curriculum (not a lot of honors but decent classes) - 4 years math (to calculus), 4 years language, 4 years science.

Their middle 50% freshman class GPA is listed as 4.1 - 4.7 HS GPA with a corresponding SAT score of 1250-1400 (for non-residents). Highly unlikely that a kid at the 25th percentile of admits has a 4.1 weighted GPA using FCPS standards. Same could be said for the 75th percentile as well. 4.7/1400.

Appreciate feedback from parents who have gone through admissions process at U-SC. I couldn't find the rubric on their website. They have extensive doc. on how to convert a numeric GPA to a 4.0 scale that didn't help.

My DS was HS 2020 so been a couple years but this is how it worked in the calculation. Only the core requirements classes are included, so 4 English, 4 Math, 2 Science, 3 Social Studies, 2 Foreign Language and 1 Art. AP, Honors and IB get an extra point if A,B or C. They take the best combination/most advantageous if you have more in Core area (like 6 Math) and it works about better to use all 6, they will use. But if it brings it down, they don’t use. For example, my DD had B’s and C’s in Spanish 3 and 4, so she used only 2 years of FL but 5 years of Math. Anyway, it probably does end up being higher than your transcript weighted GPA. My DD was unweighted 3.4 and weighted 3.9 on transcript with 1250 (before test optional) and got in. But I know times are changing. Good Luck
