Toxic work traits- Information hoarding

I’ll spend days or weeks trying to find out what I need to do to get my job done. Another time I will be going crazy trying to find tech solutions, calling IT, looking through manuals and it turns out they didn’t want to give me higher permissions within the program. For no reason. So the reason this program didn’t work for me was because a lot of the settings weren’t enabled. This has gone on for years. It’s their entire office and it affects quite a few managers, not just myself.

What is this? It’s like their toxic trait at work. I’m not even sure what they get out of it- power?

Power, indispensability, self-preservation. I once worked with a woman like this. For her I think part of it was to protect her own success - she didn't want someone senior swooping in and taking credit. She made her reputation by delivering what was asked for on time. God help you if you tried to interfere. Her own team was terrified of her and I watched her shut off the information tap on a senior manager who treated her badly, leaving him flailing.

Sometimes it's so much more than "information hoarding." I have to realized that the reason some people have more job security is that they are willing to be controlled. If you're not willing to be controlled, then you have less job security, more personal freedom.

Toxic culture

It's bullying behavior. Information is power. Call it what you want Op, Office politics, or whatever. The words don't matter, same behavior.

Leave.

You won't change the culture or the behavior. The best thing you can do to protect yourself and your sanity is to leave. Start looking now, reach out to friends/old colleagues to network, and get the hell out of there.

Sabotage and gaslighting. The reality is, the only solution to these toxic work cultures is to leave.
