GDS Incoming 9th Grade to be much smaller

The cap was part of the zoning order with the permit application when the GDS high school, and later the full school, moved into the neighborhood. The cap is the cap and it is there for safety reasons, ie fire marshall/building codes etc - so if GDS was in violation, it isn't necessarily for neighborhood traffic that is an issue, but rather how many people (staff, faculty, students) are in the space physically.

And if I were a member of the GDS community, I would be concerned that the school wasn't managing this properly.

The ANC is not the bad guy here.

My understanding is that GDS was initially led to believe they would have several years to cure the enrollment issue, but then the ANC told them it had to be cured this year. This is all second and third hand, but that’s my understanding of the situation.

The easiest solution would have been to find a religion to say they're affiliated with and then just ignore the ANC and zoning

Declining enrollment is the first sign of a failing school.

LOL enrollment is not declining at GDS. They were overenrolled and now need to cut back to get to the 1075 cap. GDS is still rejecting far more applicants than it admits. Declining enrollment due to interest can be a sign of a failing school. Declining enrollment due to ANC rules is not.

Yes there was much discussion on DCUM but no one had seen hard numbers before this story, unless I'm mistaken. That's why I said it was conjecture and now seems confirmed.

Well they obviously didn’t have hard numbers on admissions before admissions had occurred. But the school did say quite a while ago that there would be reductions. Even without the final numbers, it hasn’t been “conjecture”, it’s been fact, confirmed previously.

Capped enrollment is not the same thing as declining enrollment, numbnut.

This is insane. GDS is already the most sought-after top independent in DC.

Good year to be a faculty kid or a sibling, esp for ninth.

If GDS needs a revenue stream, when will they develop the mixed-use, PUD plan on the Wisconsin Avenue that GDS owns. That area could use more vibrantization.

That’s definitely not the case for me. No on-campus lunch for high schoolers, and a 10 college application cap was a deal breaker. It’s a hard pass on GDS for my family. Y’all can fight over those seats if you like…

For most GDS students, the 10-college/univ cap is beside the point. They have their choice of great schools, often multiple Ivies.

Tell that to the ANC, which wouldn't approve gds's development plans.

That doesn’t appear to be the case this year.

Haven't most of the Ward 3 ANCs been taken over by Smart Growth? They'll ask why the development isn't bigger.

Since the school is relatively new (compared to other local privates) are there a lot of founders’ descendants at the school?
