Also it was senior skip day at our local HS, which I suspect resulted in more than a few kids in similar states.

Wow! I didn't know kids still do drugs. My daughter doesn't even have friends who smoke. They are all too into school and athletics to do that. I suppose I was the same way.

I would be really hurt if my kids did drugs. It would be strong evidence thay they don't share my values around health and hence a failure on my part. At 17 though, you have to let them make those choices. I would ask (not punish) and my disappointment would probably ooze out my pores even if I didn't say anything.

So what? It was 420. He’s 17. Or he was just hungry. My kid can eat like that on a normal day
