In Virginia do I need to carry any proof of vehicle registration with me?

NP. Honestly, the only way I know to have my license and registration is from having watched so many tv shows and movies where someone gets pulled over and the cop says, "License and registration". I got my license at 16 like most Americans, but I have had to take the written test twice in the past 10 years because I moved to different states from living abroad, and I don't remember that being a question. So perhaps it is not well known? License, registration, and insurance - all have to be physical cards/papers. It seems ridiculous that it has to be physical these days. I have a digital driver's license that I can use at the liquor store, but not really anywhere else.

Insurance doesn’t have to be paper. They are fine with you showing it to them on your phone

Maybe it's different by state. In my state, a cop told us as an fyi that we need a paper copy.

It varies by state, so I just keep a paper copy to be sure.

I bet they want a paper copy because they take the documents with them to their car where they sit and write out the ticket, they probably wouldn't want to take your phone.
