| Coleus! Knee-high, showy, come in a million colors, and deer hate them. Nice for protective borders around beds. (Bigger and showier than marigolds.) |

Salvias are very pretty. Lobelia (cardinal flower) is actually perennial but may require dividing, and can be treated as an annual. Its about 4' tall, comes in red or blue, and hummingbirds love it.
Liatris is also pretty, but for a little more, the lobelia blooms last longer. Monarda (bee balm) is nice for the butterflies and hummingbirds, but the blooms don't last long. |

my favorite annual is vinca. Many pretty colors, flowers like crazy, no deadheading required! In my garden, it seeds not in a invasive way but I'm expecting free vinca to start coming up soon!

Lobelia, liatris, monarda are perennials. Some varieties of salvia can also be perennial depending on their hardiness. |
| Lantana. It can sometimes come back, depending on winter conditions. |
