Talk me down from a ledge - mammogram callback

You can request to read the report (for example, John Hopkins has it loaded in mychart by next day). If there is no digital portal, you can just call the place and ask for a copy of the report. It will have the findings and reason for callback.

Oh, and I got callbacks with every single mammogram. Some biopsies too. it's common!

I’ve had 5 biopsies after diagnostic mammogram/MRIs (high risk so monitored more closely) and only one time was it cancerous, so they do callbacks and biopsies when there are suspicious but non cancerous findings too. Sometimes they really just do take another look and do ultrasound imaging to look at something from a different perspective.

Hope it’s just an extra careful radiologist.

I was called back and appt was made for a week or so later. I’m here to say it was cancer. Stage 1. And I’m ok. So you tell yourself either they’ve caught it early OR it’s nothing. That’s why you go. Hoping for a big nothing for you.

OP- Hope all is well. I was in your shoes this week.

I'm 53 and have dense breasts. I've had about 5-6 prior 3D mammograms and never got a call back.

I went in Wednesday and got a call from BOTH the breast center and my regular doctor that I needed to go back in for more images on right breast. I went in portal and it said 'asymmetry area on right breast'.

I thought since they called so quick and got me in so quick it meant something. It didn't. I, thankfully, got the additional mammogram this morning and was given the all clear. I hope you get one too.

I’m not the OP but in the same boat and am worried. I just turned 40 and had my first mammo yesterday and got a call this am that the radiologist saw a mass!! I am going back in a week. I don’t have a family history. Has anyone specifically been told they had a mass and it turned out to be something benign? I’m really scared

I’ve had a mass that wasn’t cancer. It’s common. Best wishes and good luck.

This happened to me last fall and it ended up being ok. I apparently had an area of tissue necrosis. I know it’s hard not to freak out but it’s really a high probability this is nothing. Hugs.

Honestly everyone goes through it. Try to relax as much as you can.

Yes, had a call back and biopsy and they said was just a cyst so it may be totally ok I know it’s scary though!

Yes. Mass can be anything. Mine was a cyst.

No cancer.

Callbacks are more common on first mammograms, because they have nothing to compare it to.

Odds are you are fine.
