Everyone likes to be celebrated and feel loved. Put out the birthday banners and decorate a table with wrapped gifts. Stock the fridge with her favorites and some cupcakes. Then let her do what she wants - she’ll feel cherished but not trapped and you got to give pleasure. Parenting is about sacrifice.

If it is long past her birthday, I would not make that the focus. Ask her what her plans are while home. Work around that for a family gathering. Offer to fund or to contribute to whatever she is doing with friends,,,"since we did not get to do that for your birthday."
