On Disney, the app is not an extra charge.

Correct. At least it did on our Christmas cruise.

On NCL the texting plan is about $10 per person for the whole trip. On Carnival I think it's $15 per person.

For us it's worth it, even though we like to disconnect on vacation. It's nice to ask someone to meet up if you found a fun activity or asking grandparents if they need anything...things like that. Also for letting young teens go off on their own.

If you have iPhones put in airplane mode and connect to ships Wi-FI (don’t login though, it will take all your wifi minutes too). You can then iMessage.
