Kent Garden Rezoning

Also what’s up with the weird hallway “classroom”? The one with the mobile partition dividers.

According to a county map I saw a while back, the KGES district has the highest concentration of French speakers of anywhere in the county. I’m sure some moved into the area due to the FI program.

Just be happy that your school is actually getting the rezoning. Ours is just getting a new school nobody asked for or needs in 8-10 years.

Good point except that if we weren’t wasting that money on that ES the HS for Kent Gardens could get the addition it has needed for years. Frisch is an idiot.

The school guard should never have ceded the old Lewisville school property to the county programs. Redoing and reopening it would be hugely beneficial now. It could get back its old district that KG now had snd could absorb some of Tyson’s anticipated growth.

The Lewinsville building was torn down and the county built subsidized senior housing at that location. That ship has sailed. But some KG kids can move to other nearby schools. It is not a hard problem to fix.

Rezoning is always a hard sell. Even between highly rated schools. Families have multiple kids, they don’t want to have them at different schools. People develop relationships with principals, teachers, and staff. People live in communities that support them and when parts of that community gets switched to another school, it does change the dynamics of the community for many years.

I’m not saying it’s not the right choice in a lot of cases, but I think people should try to understand and be sympathetic instead of just saying there shouldn’t be a discussion.

I don't place much weight on this argument. Principals, teachers, and staff can and do leave on a whim with no guarantees they'll be there for a younger sibling. Those relationships should not be obstructions for making fiscally responsible and logical decisions when it comes to facilities management.

Nobody should be crying about getting rezoned to franklin sherman, chesterbrook, haycock. It will be easier and better for everyone if the zoning is recalibrated. All of these schools are in the pyramid and are all equally as good if not better than KG. Part of the zoning for KG should go to Churchill, which is Langley district. Boo hoo it will raise their property values.

While they are at it, they should fix the dumb Churchill/Spring Hill zoning.

We are a Churchill family. We used to get a lot of Kent gardens kids for AAP but not since Cooper also became an AAP center. If I were a KG parent, I would not want to send my kid to Churchill to be one of few kids who don’t go to Cooper/Langley and go to Longfellow/McLean instead. I’m sure keeping all the AAP kids did not help KG overcrowding.

I do think there could be some boundary fixing between Spring Hil, Churchill, Franklin Sherman and Kent Gardens.

They could clean up the boundaries by moving the part of Sherman that feeds to Langley to Churchill and then moving a bit of Sherman (the areas east of Kirby) to Chesterbrook. Then Sherman could pick up a decent chunk of Kent Gardens. Done.

students north of chain bridge do not need to attend Kent gardens.

there are also students zoned for Franklin Sherman that should attend Churchill.

this is so true - we live in the little triangle that is zone FSES, Cooper, Langley. Why that neighborhood wasn't rezoned to Churchill Rd back in the 80's when most of FSES was rezoned to Longfellow and McLean I will never understand.

I was on KG grounds just last evening.

There are TWO (2) new temporary trailers parked on the athletic fields, ready to be installed.

When my kids were there in 2021, DS’s teacher suffered chronic respiratory illness in a trailer (which is still there). Turns out the trailer was full of black mold, which isn’t surprising because they are supposed to be used for a year or two ( ie temporarily), but it had been there for over 7 years!

The current School Board views McLean as “privileged” so they won’t spend one penny more than they absolutely must on Kent Gardens. Same goes for dilapidated McLean High School.

If only there were an election coming up for a new school board . . .

It is looking like David Fiske for Board of Supervisors and Paul Bartkowski for School Board might be the candidates who’d pay the most attention to the overcrowding and poor state of facilities in the pyramid. Certainly Elaine Tholen was largely ineffective and there’s been no indication Robyn Lady cares about the schools in the MHS pyramid.

There is a new feedback form. The event hasn’t started yet. I think it is really only about identifying what schools should be involved in a boundary change.
