William & Mary vs. Reed?

Anonymous
My son got into Reed last year EA. We pushed him to apply because of the strong academics and other factors. It wasn't the right fit for him socially and he wound up getting into a top Northeastern SLAC via ED, so the decision was made for him. But our family in CA - who are not remotely political - were far more impressed with Reed than most of the rest of his list. So I do think it has a high name recognition on the West Coast. I would pick W&M for my kid, but Reed has a lot going for it.

Reed was too left wing fringe-y for my kid— who ended up attending Oberlin. The hard drug subculture was a real issue for her. She also though the kids were intellectually pretentious— taking fringe positions for the sake of being able to say they have fringe positions.

Steve Jobs went to Reed so there are some unusually smart people who went there.

My DC also got into, but ultimately doesn't attend, Reed. There is not much name recognition here on the East Coast, except for a couple of my elderly neighbors (whose backgrounds are in diplomacy and academia), who were very impressed that DC got into Reed. Someone on this board posted a college comparison website a couple of years ago where you could input 2 schools and see where students who got into both ultimately attended -- it was about 1/3 Reed to 2/3 W&M. That doesn't tell you anything about your child and what is the best fit for them.

Many years ago I had a short fling a Reed graduate. She wasn't nearly as wild as she thought she was.

That says something about you, not the school.

I'm chuckling at the people calling W&M conservative. I mean, they have conservative students there, but my very left daughter has found plenty of friends. If you are in state, it shouldn't even be a question of where to go. Not to slam Reed, just common sense.

What are you basing this on (that Reed is more rigorous)?

I'm happy with that.

I assume you are not in state!?
