I just started on Qsymia and we shall see. My doctor said to give it some time and we can try the GLP-1s if it doesn’t work. So far it definitely inhibits my appetite. |
Are you required to start on Qsymia vs a GLP-1? |
No, or at least I wasn’t required to for my insurance. I don’t have that much to lose, and so we decided to start with a medication the side effects of which are less difficult. My doctor said I’d get 10-20 pounds with Qsymia and then we’d reassess. If I want more “vanity” weight, then we’d go to the GLP-1s. |
So how are these drugs different from GLP-1s? Are they shorter term? I have been on Zepbound for a year, and a lot of the negativity toward it is way overblown. It has been amazing for me. There are *possible* risks with any drug and certain risks with being overweight. The nausea etc gets talked about a lot because people want to focus on the negatives, but for most people that goes away pretty quickly. For a smaller number of people it doesn’t, I realize, but that is rare. I can understand focusing on the lifetime aspect of it, but do these drugs have a better record of people keeping weight off, permanently quieting food noise etc? Or easier to get through insurance/cheaper? That is definitely a downside to the GLP-1s, for now at least. Asking seriously because I hadn’t heard of those drugs. |
Not everyone suffers from nausea as a side effect, and for those who do it isn't always serious. But really problematic nausea is not "rare" on GLP-1 meds. |
Totally different class of drugs. Google can you better understanding. I've been on Contrave for about 2 years. I haven't lost much on it, but definitely helps maintain the weight I lost from Mournjaro (150lbs). |
For me the Qsymia was a way to dip my toe into weight loss drugs. A way to get started. If it doesn’t work I’ll move to a GLP-1, or if I want to lose more weight. I’m only a week in and it definitely has affected my appetite, and then as a result, it’s sort of making me move more and get excited about getting healthier. I really hope I can lose some weight. |
I'm 7 weeks on Contrave and feel great. I'm aiming to lose about 25lbs total and 7 weeks in I've lost around a pound a week since starting. No real side effects to speak of other than vivid dreams, basically every night. I've had some constipation but nothing that can't be easily remedied. I've found it to be an excellent appetite suppressant and very helpful at curbing cravings. I'll continue to take it for as long as I see results and hope to hit my goal weight this summer. I've tried MANY different weight loss plans and this is by far the healthiest way Ive ever tried to lose weight. |
It’s so SLOW! though! I’m about 6 weeks in and 6 pounds down. Slow and steady I guess? Sigh. 😊 |
