I always imagined menopause to be 1) you turn 50 2) you have a few hot flashes, and 3) your period goes away. Nobody mentioned it was a "process."
|
| Let's not. The 'let's talk about X' or 'tell me about X'..really bug the crap out of me. Maybe it's just me. Thanks for letting me vent. |
| The sweating. Lots and lots of sweating (especially night sweats). I'm 50. |
| The night wakings are due to decreasing hormone levels (for some reason, they fall even more around 2 am). I don't think anything can be done except some form of HRT. |
This is timely for me - I'm about to turn 49 and just started having irregular periods. I don't have any other real symptoms. I get up at night to pee, just like I've done for years. I'm thinner than I've ever been, I do have to watch what I eat, but this is usual for me. I exercise a lot. I like the poster who said not to anticipate, because menopause is different for everyone. The average age is 51, so some of you younger women may not be going through this at all; it could be totally unrelated. The worst part for me has been that I now never know when I'm going to get my period. I used to be able to tell exactly when it was coming, now I walk around with a freaking panty liner on all the time 'just in case.' Can't stand that.

| Agree with PP who advised exercise. That's helped me enormously, along with drinking lots of water, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and relatively little red meat. I'm 50 and I sleep well, my skin looks good, and weight is not a problem. Daily exercise also helps with mood and, at least indirectly, with sex -- I look good, which DH appreciates, and I don't worry about what I look like without my clothes on. |

I'm 51,
I have more irregular periods, mostly regular, but skip one every once in a while. low sex drive I've gained weight, but it is due to sudden decrease in exercise and increase in eating. nothing else |
Irritability. Definitely a sign. |
Yikes. Someone is hormonal today. |

I agree with the pps that it's different for everyone so don't freak out. And don't freak out over what I'm about to say:
54 -- periods completely gone -- hot flashes for 5 friggin' years but so much more infrequent now than the first year during which I thought I was going to lose my mind. But weight and mood hasn't been a big issue for me. I've had some down times but it was from real life problems, not hormonal craziness. On the other hand, loss of sex drive and vaginal dryness has been a big problem. If it were just me, I wouldn't mind the drop in sex drive. I no longer have problems concentrating at work which is wonderful! But it's a problem when you're in a relationship with someone! Still, I get aroused and have orgasms when I make love to my husband -- it's just that I don't feel aroused unless I start making love to him. Also I do a lot more oral to get him good and ready for an orgasm before we move to intercourse. |

No, this is helpful. We'll discuss it here, thanks. Don't click if you don't like.
I second exercise helping symptoms, especially the mood swings for me. |
