What do you know about Emerson?

If significant scholarship half tuition worth it.
If not, WHY would you pay 70k for Emerson

Bumping for my kid who is in love with this school!

My high school friend attended back in late 1990s and then had a long career as a writer in Hollywood, albeit on not the greatest shows. But for what he wanted, LA, he got it.

Emerson is very appealing for certain kids and the Boston location is excellent, but they’ve had some financial challenges in recent years so do your research. My student got some merit, I think around $15k. She was interested in their Writing Literature & Publishing program. In the end, she preferred a more academic and traditional liberal arts school (Emerson seems more preprofessional/career focused, which isn’t bad just different).

My ‘25 grad applied to the Political Communication program, and was accepted with some merit money. They really inked it after visiting, and the AO was definitely trying to yield them, but they ultimately decided to go abroad instead. Yes, Emerson has had some financial difficulties, and there was tension between the students and admin re not feeling supported enough after the Boston PD cracked down pretty harshly on their Gaza protests. I think if you have an arts-leaning child who really, really isn’t interested in any “real” math or science, and who wants solid preparation for a career in the arts, communication, journalism, publishing, etc. it’s worth looking into. My kid was 99th percentile verbal and 72nd percentile math on the SAT, so Emerson was speaking their love language.

Henry Winkler is an alum …. also Bobbi Brown of makeup fame. Lots of Hollywood writers and producers as well. Not household names but very successful. It’s also an excellent school for journalism and they also have a school for communication science and disorders, which is very well respected.

Jennifer Coolidge is also an Emerson graduate and was their commencement speaker last year. Definitely a fun and interesting alumni network!

I loved her speech to the class of 2025 (of which my kid was a member!)! And Henry Winkler was the speaker this year. There are a lot of successful Emerson graduates - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Emerson_College_people

DC enjoyed Emerson, and adored being in Boston. It’s definitely a niche education, although my kid had no complaints about not needing foreign language, math, or science classes! - but the school provides excellent opportunities for students who are interested in the fields of study offered.

Mine is very excited about Emerson and being part of the “Emerson Mafia” alumni network. The network are very involved in securing internships and jobs for current students/recent grads + the money they donate to the school - was one of the deciding factors in committing.

Their alumni network (aka Mafia) is fantastic if you want to go into broadcasting/film/media. It's a great school for a certain type of kid -- one who knows what they want. Def has a preprofessional vibe. Awesome location!
