Why does OP feel her child is above providing service to his community? OP you are the reason your society is failing now in "first world" countries. Your kid has plenty of time to get the 20 hours fulfilled. Be a better person and parent.

I think it’s fine if you want your child to participate in service, but mandatory for graduation seems extreme. I live in another state and my sons needed service hours for National Honor Society, but that was a club and they could choose to accept the policy or quit.

She's not asking for help. She's asking for a get-out-of-jail pass for a requirement that every other student has to meet to graduate and wondering if her son can get away with not doing the work.

+1. If school districts want kids to learn about volunteering, then integrate it into the curriculum. Requiring it for graduation is overreach. I find it unlikely that individual schools in MCPS would actually withhold diplomas due to this requirement. I'd like to see an audit. How many kids / families just make their service experience up and turn in the form?

50 of the required 75 hours are incorporated into required school classes throughout MS and HS. My current 9th grader also received 9 SSL hours for advisory lessons (required) in the first semester of this year and 2 hours for a required training activity in a previous year. There are also other opportunities offered through school activities, some of which are during school hours. There are a lot of opportunities given to meet this graduation requirement without much effort.

Also the amount required is pro-rated down if you come late into an MD HS
