Do you tip at drive thrus?

I avoid the ones that use tipping. Some few don't. I don't want to pull out my readers to make a drive through purchase.

If people are serving me, working hard, and have a low paying job, I tip them.

Why Starbucks but not others?

NP. I tip when the restaurant makes it easy. If I use an app to order and the app includes an option to tip, I frequently tip. If I order in person and a tipping option pops up on the screen, I usually tip. If a cashier is swiping my credit card and doesn’t say a word about tipping, I don’t tip. I don’t usually use cash, so I don’t place money in tip jars.

At least at Starbucks, they’re making and customizing my drink so I get it exactly how I want it. That’s more tip-worthy than handling me a cup that I’ll fill myself, like at Panera.

Interesting. But aren't they making and customizing your sandwich/bowl/whatever at Panera? Is it harder (more tip-worthy) to make a coffee drink than a salad?

This is the correct answer. Where does it end?

There are quite a few. When I search near me and filter for drive thru on the store locator, there are over 40 in a rough circle around Baltimore/Annapolis/Woodbridge/Leesburg.

I don’t too there, or at any drive thru or takeout. Delivery and sit down only.
