For folks posting that they were waitlisted everywhere

Diversity doesn’t even matter anymore with all the applicants, they don’t need to make any exceptions for that anymore.

Diversity certainly matters! A boy in my son’s class with way less qualifications got into 2 of the big 3 ( lower grades than son , average athlete, not nearly as active at school ).
I’m totally for giving opportunities for disadvantaged kids who are bright and promising … this kid was neither but checked the diversity box.

I have a lower middle class URM kid. Accepted, no aid at one school. Waitlisted everywhere else. All other boxes seemed checked -- recommendations, grades, sport, music, extracurricular/interest-based academic pursuits -- but we have very little money at this time.

It is not a guarantee that "diverse" will earn a spot anywhere. We didn't bank on that, of course, because that would be gross. We applied w/the same hopes and dreams as anyone else who needs aid.

It is difficult to get aid if you need a lot of aid. Schools are hesitant to wrap up a large part of their budget in one kid. This is especially true in the younger years: they school could literally be investing a million dollars+ in educating your child. They are very hesitant to do that and they often don't have the funds to do that with more than a tiny handful of kids.

So the aid is given to athlete recruits over applicants who truly need the aid?

One does not necessarily rule out the other. However, if they can check athletic recruit with diversity, they will likely be chosen over another FA applicant if they both meet other qualifications for the school.

I see less sports recruiting at our small school. NOT no recruiting, just less. I’d say maybe 3% in the class seem to barely meet academic standards and excel at some team sport (mainly football/basketball). On the other hand, if someone happens to meet all the qualifications AND is great at a sport, that definitely seems to help. DS’s class size increased by about 50% at 9th grade and I wish i could say there was some sort of identifiable trend, but mainly it was just a total crapshoot. They’re all normal, bright, nice kids and maybe it all came to a coin toss or something?

FWIW our first time around (K) DS was waitlisted everywhere and then the next year got into our top choice school for him.

I call BS. There is no way you all know the academic profile of these black kids. Just stop. Your Trumpism is showing. I feel bad you didn’t get into your school of choice but just stop with these narratives.

All 5 black kids I know that applied this year were shut out. One was accepted into a school that accepts most kids. All but one were full pay.

What's your back up plan?

Next week I'll start sending emails. After decision deadline start calling. I'm hoping the WL will move. If not, maybe homeschooling with some other kids in his class. I've talked to some other parents about it. Public has really suffered since covid and it doesn't seem like they have a plan.
