How common is it for dogs to want to eat almost everything in sight?

yes, this. we had this with our golden doodle. He did grow out of it but it took a few years and socks were never safe, now matter how old he got.

What does "in sight" mean? If we leave our shoes on the floor our dog has no interest but if we drop a piece of food on the floor? Of course, I think almost dogs will eat food that is available to them. He isn't counter surfing, though.
