DCPS April Break

Plus we have this unnecessary February break. I’d much rather have our kids out of school a week earlier.

DCPS announced a few years ago that they will synch Spring break with Emancipation day. It just so happens that the last few years this also aligned with Easter week. This year it does not. Next year Easter is in March and DCPS Spring break will not align with it - but it will align with Emancipation Day.

AND DCPS in its infinite wisdom has the last day of school next year as Monday - June 17th. Yes - you read that correctly.

Will they still sync with April break when they get rid of the February break next year? That's a long stretch.

For 2023, yes.
For 2024, Junteeth is Tuesday.

Right but don't all federal holidays do that Monday closest to the date thing?

Yes. There's still a five-day weekend around Presidents' Day and a four-day weekend in March.

Flights ARE NOT cheaper in February. The airlines have figured this out in the DC area with their algorithms. So it doesn’t matter anymore whether you vacation in December or now.

I’m not seeing any five day weekends in the calendar? A long weekend at the end of the month but that’s it….what am I missing?

No, June 19th is Juneteenth.

No, not all of them. 4th of July is always on the 4th of July for example.

You're both wrong. Juneteenth is June 19th, not 17th. It isn't observed on the closest Monday, it's a "day of" holiday.

I second the PP poster who said schools don't want the kids there until the end. My kid's third grade teacher told her she didn't need to be there the last two days, either. I think she was one of six or fewer who attended until the bitter end.

starting/ending school on anything other than a Monday or a Friday is obnoxious. (unless you're starting the day after Labor Day, like we used to in Virginia)

This really makes no sense but then again I guess it does make sense that DCPS doesn’t follow a logical schedule.

I thought it was dumb to have kids continue school AFTER Juneteenth holiday. What a miserable waste of time.

There is literally no reason to end school on a Monday. None whatsoever.
