What is the locker room situation? Do they have to use it to change for PE?

Former Blair magnet parent. DC took net sports and yoga and hasn't changed clothes for PE. Fortunately, yoga didn't involve a lot of exertion and net sports was last period, so BO wasn't too big of an issue.

Magnet parents of older kids told me DC should take PE senior year so it wouldn't hurt their weighted GPA for colleges. It also can be a great way to take an easier class senioritis kicks in. DC took one PE class sophomore year when there weren't any other classes they wanted to take and one senior year. I think your child should take it when it best fits in their schedule.

Do any colleges really use the MCPS pre-calculated GPA? Most use the transcript and calculate their own value that excludes non-academic classes anyways.

When you get your almost guaranteed A in PE will not affect your college chances.

I think that strategy is outdated. Competitive colleges nowadays calculate their own GPAs.

True. But if you skip gym that year and take an AP and get an A (weighted more heavily), that is more helpful in many ways.

One extra point in a half year class over 4 years just does not matter.

So is PE every day if you choose that elective?

It's a requirement. Yes it's everyday

You really need to get over yourself.

My CAP kid did PE 9th grade. Just did general PE. It was good to have an active class that year to balance out the work that year. She didn't love it, but hey, can't love everything.

I would've liked PE if I could've taken yoga or weightlifting. Kids today are so lucky.

Sympathy for your DC, OP. Sounds like there are good options and no need to deal with changing in a locker room. Just make sure they can tell if they have BO and keep hand sanitizer (to clean the BO-causing bacteria) plus a travel-sized deodorant in their backpack!

I was surprised by the options too. I have loved it too.

Colleges recalculate GPAs. Weighting doesn't impress: strength of schedule does. There are HS districts in the country that weight on 7-point scales.

Would Calc BC get more weight than AP Psych or are all AP's treated the same by most colleges?

Anonymous wrote:PE can be rough in any school and it sounds like it's more about her child than it is about the school. My child, who is small and skinny, is not at Blair but was physically pushed around and pushed down a lot by two much larger kids during PE. It wasn't like the other kids were beating DC but purposely shoving and bumping DC to the ground. The locker rooms were not supervised well. DC did not want to report the issue to the teachers so it was a difficult semester.

I think it's a valid question OP asked.

Poster above you. I hear you, but it sounded for the context of OP's post that she was concerned about pe at Blair in particular, not pe in general. If the latter, apologies from me.

I didn't get that at all. Seemed like a general concern.
