We're just starting to think about what we'll buy (first trimester). New for sure = carseat, crib mattress, angelcare monitor, changing table pad, and stroller. My DH insists we have to get a new stroller. I don't care, but he runs/jogs and wants to take our child when DC is old enough. I get for running strollers you want to be sure that the parts work - so we'll get new. They're just so expensive.

I would avoid a used mattress because they can grow mold. |
I would go new for anything with cloth or hard to clean areas if you don't know the origin. High chairs might be OK, you can use one of those steamers to get into the crevices or order a new cusion. Car seat is a must, my kids have spit up, thrown up, and had diaper blowouts a few times.
If you have a friend or family member who had a swing or walker that they never used this could be fine but i wouldn't get one second hand. Cribs, changing tables, closet organizers etc are all great second hand. |
How? My matterss is covered in thick layer of vinyl, and on top of that we use the ultimate crib sheet, which also have a waterproof bottom. Every once in a while I wipe it with a chlorox wipe just for the heck of it. |
We read in the Baby Bargains book that used mattresses (esp. from unrelated kids) are a risk factor for SIDS. I'm not sure if there is new research on that, but that's why we happily accepted our friends' crib, but bought a new mattress for it. |
That sounds like quite a stretch. |
Car seats expire, from what I've been told. I've read that the 2 things you should definitely get new were a mattress and a car seat. I can understand the car seat, but not sure about the mattress. My brother sent me his children's baby furniture when we had our son because our mom had bought it for his children-it made sense for me to have it. He told me I had to get a new mattress-and can't remember why, but he did give me an explanation. Car seats are always being upgraded-my husband, Mr. Cheapo, agreed to buy 2 convertable Britax carseats-I was shocked! Alexandria City has a hotline for car seats. |
I am the PP. Here's a description of the association. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2002/10/10/earlyshow/contributors/emilysenay/main525140.shtml http://www.hpakids.org/holistic-health/articles/47/1/Crib-Mattresses-and-Infant-Death I agree, it is correlation and not necessarily causation, but we just figured it wasn't worth the risk, and it was a little gross to use a mattress that had no doubt been pooped/peed/thrown up upon by another child. |
Used breast pumps are fine if you buy new tubing. |
Crib/mattress & car seat are the only thing we have to have new. I plan to buy used bouncy seats, swings, pack & pack, etc. I will probably only put new clothes on the baby till he/she is 3 months old, after that, it's buying lots of clothes on Ebay. I guess we'll also get a new stroller, unless we can find a used one in really good condition. But we have all new crib sheets and bedding already, that's only because we wanted specific colors. |
Stroller -- for me a must because I plan to use it heavily. Buy cheap and buy twice, my mother always said. |
The reason that I've heard it recommended that carseats be new is that you have to replace them after an accident and if you don't know the history of one, then you don't know if it is safe. I suppose over time there could be new safety updates as well, but I don't know. |
Most people would want a new car seat because if the seat has been in an accident previously it could have it's ability to protect your child compromised. Similiar to a motorcycle helmet. A drop could give either one a hairline fracture that once in a real accident could keep it from doing its intended job.
That said, I've bought almost everything used. A friend had mentioned the whole used mattress = SIDS thing which I had never heard of. I did a little research and the short answer as I understand it is that there are all sorts of chemicals (from making the mattress flame retardant) that start to emit toxic fumes over time and hover over the mattress. Then your baby is sleeping in those toxic fumes which presumably is the cause of SIDS. http://www.babysake.com/#What_every_parent_should_know:_ Since I was planning on wrapping my mattress anyway, I didn't care if it was used. |
Previous poster, can you explain what you mean by wrapping the mattress? Thanks |
