My Best Friend's Wedding

I interpreted their relationship that he always had a thing for her and she didn't show interest in him in a romantic way because she took it for granted that he was always her back-up plan. But then when he was no longer an option, she's all of the sudden in love with him and he doesn't know what to do because he always had a thing for her. For her, it was more about winning than being in love with him. For him, he was really torn between two women who were really important to him.

I don’t think it was about winning necessarily. I just think she thought he’d always be there or that she had more time to figure it out. But once he was getting married, she realized she’d missed the opportunity.

But yeah, no I realize they're all cringy. He's way too old for Kimmy. Kimmy is young and insecure. Julia Roberts is too desperate. He leads her on.

Still has a great soundtrack though!

Love the soundtrack. The whole reason I decided to rewatch it was because the man who composed most of those songs recently died and I hadn’t realized that he wrote basically every love song in that movie

I Say a Little Prayer has been stuck in my head all week because of the news!

In short: both Dermot and Julia are terrible people in that film. No clue why my generation tolerated it. Selfish, immature adults acting like teenagers.

Loved Rupert in that movie.

This. Plus, the I Say a Little Prayer for You scene.

The whole movie is worth it because of that scene

To the person who said Dermot was not a villain - no he was not, but he was getting married to a college junior billionaire while still having massive hang ups about his ex- to the point that he spent most of his wedding weekend hanging out with his ex instead of his fiancé. He is not a villain but he is immature and kind of a douche.

You don’t remember “the man”’s name is Burt Bacharach?

I do…. but most lay people don’t know that name if I said it, so, I said “the man who composed most of the songs in that movie”.

It’s just interesting because nowadays you wouldnt see one of the female romantic leads being a smoker. times change! thats all.

Unpopular opinion, but I found Kimmy to be vapid, spoiled, and annoying and her relationship with Michael made zero sense.

Agreed.

She almost seems to be a bit slow.

Oh I agree she was so one dimensional and you’re right, we don’t even learn how they met. In what universe would a college kid meet a late-20s sportswriter even if her father owned a sports team? It’s not like he would be in the luxury box with them, plus, she is theoretically in college and not living with her dad

The only reason we are given as to why Michael loves her (because he specifically says it’s not the billions of dollars!) is that she is openly affectionate with him and lets him show her affection openly too. And previous GFs (Julianne) were not openly loving.

That’s not really enough to keep your marriage going.

C'mon. He's not. Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin, both of whom sang the famous song, are.
