Friendly PSA about Virtual Virginia Summer PE (APS edition)

It’s so you can do those things with music and get other requirements filled 9th and 10th. Like Economics. It is profoundly unfair to band and choral students many who count on this option.

What does this mean? How does this impacts kids in the arts (not being contrary, I just dont understand).

It’s often hard for kids who want to do IB or AP sciences (which require 2 blocks) to get in all the requirements and take band or chorus all 4 years. Summer PE is a way to get back a block or two for music. And FCPS allows it as does LCPS. So there will be a lot of complaints if APS doesn’t. Starting with me. 😀

This doesn't make sense because the AP sciences that require 2 periods aren't allowed to be taken until junior year and the PE requirement is only for freshman and sophomores. IB sciences are two years, rather than two periods.

I agree people want more flexibility and that's why they take it in the summer, but the flexibility isn't for AP/IB science classes.

+1 DD has done band all 4 years at W-L. The only thing she did in summer school was Econ & Personal Finance. She still has taken 2 IB science classes (IB Bio over 2 years, IB Environmental as a double block senior year), did FL through level 5, and could have taken a flex period in senior year but opted for an art class for fun.

The reason this happens is bc of the Econ course and the elective sequence. Additionally, classes like accounting, psych, programming, etc are only offered as full year. My student took the sequentials in 9th & 10th. No free elective space without summer PE. Then, 11th introduced AP science. That means 1 elective spot and you have to take Econ one year. Outside of the sequential, mine will only have the option for 2 “interest” electives unless opting out of AP science in 12th.

The bottom line is, at Yorktown, and I assume the rest of APS, it is IMPOSSIBLE to take 4 years of foreign language, 4 years of band/orchestra/chorus, and AP science in both 11th and 12th grade WITHOUT taking a summer course -- either PE or Economics & Personal Finance. I think this is outrageous. And I am so angry that I did not realize it going in, because my DS would definitely have taken PE over the summer between 9th and 10th had we realized. But if he doesn't take AP Science in both 11th and 12th, his curriculum won't be considered the "most rigorous" available. Why is this allowed???

Its for students who want a second elective before they are through with the 2 years of PE. Ie: Band and Art.

Well. Let’s hope it’s not true. Because I will join with many of you in making a stink if it is.

Reviving this thread. So APS is allowing summer PE. There is the APS summer school version and VV version. Can people with experience (NOT FCPS or Loudon classes, just APS and VV) answer some questions :
For VV: Can you miss the daily scheduled VV live session and watch the recording every day for a full week so long as you are doing the work and workouts daily? Or will you get removed from the class? (Kid has a program scheduled for one week of the session)

For APS: First two weeks are live at Wakefield. Second two weeks are virtual. Is the virtual part synchronous daily class or asynchronous?

I am reviving this thread again. I am not the PP but have similar questions.

How long are the VV recorded sessions? About how much time should we plan for each day for the kid to keep up with the course? Is it ok to save some of the sessions to the weekends? So do 2 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday as an example.

What weeks do this take place? Just trying to plan for the future. Thanks

The options this year are June 3 - July 12 or June 17-July 26.

Do you have to take both sessions to miss a year of PE?

My DD’s school counselor said they will not accept VV this year. They will only accept the in person PE at Yorktown

PE9 is summer before 9th grade or during 9th grade. PE 10 is summer before 10th or during 10th.
