If you're looking for school spirit, then definitely Berkeley

Michigan and UNC will be tough reaches with those numbers. Almost no chance at Duke, and definitely don't apply to Duke or Emory if you don't want to work hard. Agree UF or UT Austin might make sense.

I question your DD actually being interested in working in finance, yet wanting to study Math or Physics. That sounds an awful lot like a parent pushing them to get a STEM background and then try to work for a hedge fund, but not something any HS kid would magically think on their own.

If she is truly burnt out by HS homework, then I doubt she is going to enjoy a Math or Physics college pathway.

You really need to pay attention to how many OOS kids that flag universities admit. Unfortunately, seems like states and getting increasingly territorial and their overall stats are meaningless when it comes to OOS applicants.

UT, University of Washington (for STEM applicants), UNC...these are all states that are significantly restricting OOS applicants (and I am sure there are many others), so they honestly seem tougher than many top privates for an OOS applicant even though they are probably a slam dunk for DD if she was in-state.

Correct. Our Naviance is showing multiple 4.4+ weighted GPA/1550+ SAT rejected from UNC and UT. UNC acceptance rate is 43% in state and 8% out of state.

The state schools are rough these days so I would go for a private...

If she wants mid-size: Duke, Emory, Wake Forest, Tulane, BC, Santa Clara, maybe Chapman or Elon for a safety
Large private: USC, BU
Small: Richmond, Middlebury, Colgate, Occidental, Davidson;

Maybe — reach Duke and Berkeley;
target UF, Wake; Emory; WashU
Safety ASU

Emory and WashU are harder to get into than Berkeley. Berkeley with a 14%acceptance rate vs 10 for WashU and 11 for Emory.

Except WashU was what...40% for ED and Emory was 30% ED1?

Berkeley is 14% overall...not sure if there is any difference between in-state and OOS.

OP here. Uh, no. This comes all from her.

Thx everyone for the suggestions!

My DC is a junior at WashU. No, WashU is not a Social Media driven school, almost no one pay attention to fashion except for the Business kids (DD wears free T-shirt to class everyday). Pop culture? What is that?

Most of the students are hard working kids. Not an easy life there if you want to get good GPA for applying Medical School or Law school. They have fun, but in a different ways.

Wants a "fun" school-good school spirit.
Why would anyone ever suggest Cornell for this kid?

Lol exactly. Sounds more like Duke, Vanderbilt or UVA. But aim for finance not medicine if she thinks four hours of homework is hard. Finance will draw upon her social skills much more as well, and doesn’t have a long drawn out path.

Top DC private--probably ending up with 3.85/1540
Extracurriculars: varsity sport, restaurant job, math team, STEM research internship
Math or physics major, not interested in CS or coding or engineering-think she probably wants to end up in finance or maybe medicine.
Wants a "fun" school-good school spirit.
She's a social kid -loves social media, popular culture, fashion, etc
Wants either a good college town or urban environment
Size of school doesn't matter
very hard worker but is tired of the grind that high school has been. It's one of those 4 hours of homework a night high schools.
Wants the time to actually have interests outside of academics in college.

What is the point of 4 hours of homework a night in HS...except to burn the kids out by the time they are choosing a college. Seems like a bummer.

Berkeley and Emory are also not that fun. Tulane if in the south (draws from the NE with lots of private school vibes) and Boston College in the north, UCLA or USC if in California.
