Tutors Why?

SAT test taking is a skill and has little to do with how smart you are.

They needed to learn how to take the test.

There are two very weak areas in MCPS, math and foriegn language instruction. My kids had math tutors from late middle school through high school because they truly had some poor teachers. It made a world of difference so if you can, I recommend getting a tutor if your child is struggling.

Here are the reasons, OP:

1. Pandemic-related learning loss.
2. Learning disabilities.
3. Getting ahead for college admissions.

In my family, we've done 2 and 3. My now high school senior had tutors in middle school related to his learning disabilities, and he had AP exam and ACT tutoring in 10th and 11th grade.

Here's another two reasons:

4. The teacher is really not that good and doesn't put material online to review later.
5. The teacher might be good, but the learning style doesn't merge well with the kid's style. A tutor will help reinforce the material being taught in class.

Same. That is exactly what we are facing right now.

DS had a math tutor since pandemic (6th grade). In class there is no individual attention and while he is bright, some math concepts are harder for him and have to be explained differently than "one fits all" MCPS method. We will continue with math tutor and at this point i am considering English tutor to help with writing skills, as I find school instruction not adequate or challenging.

My kid needs the extra practice and individual attention/trouble shooting that a tutor can provide.

As early as kindergarten, kids are divided into centers where they teach themselves a designated activity while the teacher works with another small group on something else. Sometimes all a kid needs is a little one-on-one instruction and then they thrive in the mass environment. A teacher can only reach so many children in the classroom so the tutor serves to be the extra attention a few children really need.

+1 My kid is in some difficult HS classes where they have 33 students in the class. The teacher basically goes over the lesson of the day and then the kids are on their own. Teachers have lunchtime office hours, but there is only so much one can accomplish during lunch - can't be multiple places at the same time.

My high schooler met with a calc tutor a few times to get caught up on instruction when he was very ill and missed almost two weeks of school.

Um…the pandemic and a loss of over a year of learning.

That was two years ago. Stop blaming the pandemic for your kid not going to school for a year.

I would consider moving them to lower level is tutor is needed

Same - except our kids' experience has been with weak science teachers as well. Tutor can keep kid learning even when teachers are not covering key concepts.

For all the people who responded: how did you find your tutor, especially if it was for learning disabilities?

We use the free MCPS tutors. Why? The kids like the extra support and find it helpful given there are no textbooks and sometimes they need more help/explanations especially in math as well as practice. Some tutors are great, some are duds and when we get a dud we just ask for a new one.
