non-smartphone to recommend?

I don't know what kind of activities/friend outings your daughter participates in, but smart phones might be needed for just very basic things.

I know at my kid's high school, entrance into all games, school plays, etc. are now on an app. Food at the concessions stands are all done by credit card or apple pay/venmo/etc.

So if your daughter was to join a sport team or performing art at her school, and they had some type of competition/event at a high school, she would need either a credit card or phone app just to buy a bottle of water and slice of pizza at the concession stand.

If one of her friends has an older sibling in the high school play and they (your daughter and friends) wanted to go watch the big sibling perform, they'd need to use a phone app just to get in.

I personally find it ridiculous, but it's how it is.

OP is talking about a 6th grader though.

Your kid is not using an app to access porn, fentanyl, and set themselves up for trafficking. No, not kidding.

6th graders don't need phones. Maybe at 16...maybe.

This is a 6th grader though, not a high schooler. Gabb is fine.

Well, that's the thing.

Those of us that insist on flip phones or GABB phones don't give them tablets and allow allow chrome book usage at the kitchen table for HW.

Really? your HS concession stands don't take cash?! Where are you?

I've probably been to 15+ HS over the last 6 months and haven't come across a gate/ticket counter or concession stand that is electronic only?

In fact, for one game, I didn't have cash and they were a cash only operation

Our kids have a basic flip phone. It is fine for calls and works for now. They get texts from their friends and call them back

Yes. I volunteer in the concession stands and have literally had to turn away kids who don't have a credit card or some type of payment app. I really don't like it, but it is what it is.
I don't want to say the exact school, but it's in Northern VA (public high school.)

pp you quoted here.
I'm not familiar with Gabb, is there a way to add payment apps to it (like Venmo?)
I don't know if you read my entire post. I know OP's kid is in 6th grade. I am saying that sometimes even middle school sports teams go to large events/competitions at high schools, and those high school concession stands might not take cash.

Maybe that doesn't apply to OP's kid because she doesn't participate in any sports or activities like that. But many middle school kids do.

PP back again. It sounds like you don't believe me that any school would do this. I just did a quick google search and it's definitely a thing--one of the first several results on my google search was this high school (in Ohio, so not around here and definitely not my kid's school, but still) also going cash-less. I'm sure there are lot of them

No wonder kids need lessons on financial literacy. No concept of cash

Wow.

(and to the other PP, I believe you, I was just surprised)

We've been to athletic events in MoCo, FredCo, and Carroll County and haven't seen it.

I hope the MD schools continue to allow cash.

It's nuts, bc even if your kid isn't in HS, I would drop of my MS daughter to watch the HS girls basketball team with her friends, and just give her a 20 for entrance fee & concession stand. It seems crazy to require a card or an app

PP you quoted here (I'm also the same one that linked to that school in Ohio.)

Yes, I agree. My kid is in a high school sport and the majority of "away games" throughout Northern Virginia that we've been to, not only is the entrance fee "cashless"--but you have to download a specific app (usually "Ticket Spicket" but there are a few others) just to enter the game. It's ridiculous! I always think about some elderly grandparent that just wants to watch his grand daughter play field hockey but can't figure out the app or is reluctant to add credit card info into their phone.
