what do you do when this happens?

What are the alternative paths?

I'm getting nervous.

My kid is a very high stats (good e.c. not spectacular), so maybe my nervousness is unfounded, but I just feel like it's all a lottery these days.

DC did EA to flagships like Michigan, Chicago, etc. and RD to few elite ones like Stanford. I'm not holding my breath for the elite ones, but I am not even sure about the top publics now.

Am I being ridiculous? First kid to go to college. I went to a no-name state u.

The three schools you named are all difficult to get into, considered reaches for all students. Presumably he also applied to some like-lies and matches?

Like-lies - new term for when you lie about liking a safety school. Couldn’t help myself. Sorry.

Haven’t you applied to any safeties? High stats by themselves don’t get you admitted to schools you listed. Maybe Michigan?

Ummm...Michigan and Chicago, etc. are elite schools as well. If your list only includes Stanford, Michigan, Chicago and the likes, that might be an issue. There are no targets/true safeties on those lists...and that will set you up for disappointment.
This exactly. OP, if your son's schools are all T30, I would encourage him to send out a few more applications to schools with 2/1 and 2/15 deadlines.

The last question is the key question.
They are called likelies because they are the school your kid is most likely to get into.

Have him apply to your alma mater and some state directional schools.

Just posting to say hang in there, OP. My didn't have great early results but had fantastic RD. She did take the rejections as an opportunity to revise and worked to earn a couple awards in early Spring. Maybe your kid can earn some accolade to update his apps?

Hope he gets good news soon!

my alma mater is a large public out west, and they don't care about legacy, nor would I ever pay OOS for that college.

What is a "state directional schools"?

To a PP, DC did apply to a "safety" according to collegevine or whatever it's called, but I feel like safeties aren't even safeties anymore. Plus, I'm hearing that colleges want to yield protect so some of the "safeties" will deny really high stats students.

sigh.. honestly... it really is like playing the lottery, except there's way more at stake.

Plus there are more state schools with no/rolling deadlines.

What were the safeties? Michigan doesn’t report until later this week.

Michigan and Chicago ARE lotteries for all, because they don’t have enough spaces and are highly rejective.

Just have him knock out a quick app to Iowa (or Iowa State if engineering). He’ll get a quick acceptance to a good school and you can chill while you wait to see if something more appealing to him pans out.
