Topping up raised beds - source for soil/compost?

Anonymous
We use a nursery called Woods for this. They have a raised bed mix thats one third each top soil, manure, compost. I usually get 3 - 5 cubic yards delivered every other year.

In my town, we DO NOT use the free mulch. It's introduced so many pests into people's gardens.

OP, I would go to your local specialty gardening shop and get a recommendation. They probably know more about the soil in your town than the folks at Home Depot. After that, sorry to say, I agree with the PP's recommendation of doing it yourself in multiple trips.

We just go to lowes or home depot. Or walmart for bags of topsoil / miracle grow.

Thanks for being so unnecessarily rude. My car isn’t big enough for what I need, hence asking for advice here.

Not rude, just realistic. You make multiple runs. You're not going to fill the beds in the blink of an eye anyway, so it's reasonable to do it a little at a time.

No, you were rude. There was no need to get in the “normal people” dig. All the normal people I know have mulch delivered and pay their lawn crews to spread it.

NP.

If you don't want to do it yourself because you can afford not to, fine, but to imply that "normal people" do mulch delivery and have (cough) lawn crews (?!) spread it indicates you're out of touch with "normal people."

I have tons of family and friends who garden and they do repeated trips to Home Depot/Lowes as necessary even for decent sized suburban lawns. Maaaaybe pay for delivery for a flat $79 fee, but "normal people" certainly don't have "lawn crews." Do you understand that thinking "normal people" have lawn crews is offensive?

I won't use the free mulch either. If you don't want to make multiple trips, rent that Home Depot truck f0r $19.99 and make a single trip. I've also used Merrifield Mulch

Find a soil calculator online to figure out how much you need. Gardeners Supply has one but I think I've seen them on Home Depot and other sites.

I have looked into having a bulk delivery, but delivery fees can be expensive (I've seen between $75-175). I would rather purchase higher quality bagged compost rather than paying delivery fees for inferior bulk compost.

Spare me the lecture. It was just as offensive as assuming everyone is healthy enough to do it own their own. Rudeness begets rudeness.

Veterans Compost will deliver by the cubic yard, as will Merrifield.

If you need a lot, bulk is usually cheaper than bagged. Our problem has been that we don't have a driveway, and most companies will not drop in the street. We did find one that was willing to do so when we were setting up our raised beds, we put down a tarp on the street in front of our house and then spent all afternoon hauling the soil in the wheelbarrow to the back yard. Whew! It was a lot of work. If we had a driveway and could take our time moving it we'd get bulk again as we also could use a decent topoff.

I buy the huge bags of garden soil at BJs and get my teenage son to put them down for me. Before he was big, I did it and still could now but would need a wheelbarrow.

I got bags delivered from Remington Mulch (they will also deliver bulk, but I wasn't sure how long it would take me to do - I also overordered (assuming half a foot times the area of my beds) so was glad to have bags.

+1 I've used Veteran's twice, and they're always friendly and helpful. It's not their fault I keep over ordering.

They charged us a ridiculous amount of money for labor and I don’t want to pay that again. We’ve also just bought tons of bags of compost at American Plant and done it ourselves, but it wasn’t quite enough and it was also super expensive.

Anyone know of a good source for compost that I can get delivered in bulk? And anyone know how I can calculate how much to order? I think I need about 5 inches depth per bed, they’re 12 feet long by 2.5 feet wide.

I too up my beds with soil and compost from these guys https://www.veterancompost.com/our-products/

They deliver
