Sorry 14:33, not true. According to Weschler, you have a 25% chance of randomly getting pregnant (while having sex without any birth control) in any given month, and your chances are "much higher" with her method.
Weschler (and I) hate to see people wasting precious time because they think its normal to take so long. If you don't feel like charting, that's different. |

Actually, she says it's "no higher than" 25%. And for couples in their 30s and older, she notes that it's lower.
Other sources I have read say that at 30, the chance of conceiving with perfect timing is about 20% each month. |
I recommend this to ALL of my girlfriends, regardless of whether they are TTC. Its just great info that I (embarrassingly) didn't know! |
This. |
| charting is a pain in the *ss, use the ovulation predictor kits. |
THIS is ridicoulus, most people are not going to get pregnant the first month. who wants to have sex everyday for months on end, it becomes a chore |
Don't knock it until you try it. Seems to have worked for at least several people on this thread... |
| OPKs are the best IMO. particularly bc i felt like periods were all over the place after stopping breastfeeding and this wasn't that much after that. |
Agree with the above. We used OPKs, had lots of sex every other day for weeks around ovulation time, are young and in perfect health and it took us 6 months. I know other people in a similar situation where it took even longer. There is always an element of chance in getting pregnant, and even if you do everything according to some book or some method, it doesn't mean its going to happen right away unfortunatley. Each time your chance is the same as last one if you do everything right. Reading a book that tells you it should only take 3 months will only cause undue stress, IMO, and make it even harder to get pregnant, and based on the experience of myself and others I know, and my doctor's advice, is totally inaccurate. Maybe it has some good tips on how to get pregnant, but the people who read her book and got pregnant right away and telling others everyone should get pregnant so quickly were lucky and/or very fertile. They never were in the actual situation to speak with doctors about the average time to get pregnant, which I have heard from more than one doctor is about 6 mo. Again, that's average, so taking 8 months for example is not so far outside of average. Because you have had a successful pregnancy before, unless something has really changed, and clearly not much time has passed since your last child, it doesn't seem like its time to see a specialist or be too concerned quite yet. Good luck! |
When it comes to pregnancy, everything has worked for someone. A fertility monitor gives you the best chance of hitting the right time. |
OP here - you all are fabulous. Really, truly. Spirits already lifted. Thanks for the great ideas and support. I checked out Toni Weschler - very good (and empowering) stuff and well articulated. I will try the test strips and hooray for all who suggested just going for "relations" every day - my husband will love it!!

| Clearblue Easy Ovulation (Fertily?) monitor-- "Tracked" my cycle for a few months beforehand and then got pregnant (twice) the first time I "tried". |
| If you want to chart, http://www.fertilityfriend.com/ is a good site. |
| Every other day during the entire fertility window worked for us twice. OPKs are great but they are pricey and a pain to do at work (unlike HPTs which work best with first morning urine, OPKs are best taken in the middle of the day). Charting would have been the next step for us...I am a zombie in the morning so I wasn't looking forward to temping but I know it really helps to understand your cycle. GL and try to stay positive! |
| I say chart for only a couple months to see where your cycles are.. and a fertility monitor is great.. BUT my RE says basically, charting just reminds you every morning that you are "trying" I stopped and a lot of stress went with it... |
