New poster - Both Heidelberg and Randolph cookies are meh. Randolph is good for croissants and visually showstopping individual desserts. Their special order layered sheetcakes are delish - but not visually as amazing as Heidelberg. Heidelberg is good for German pretzels and layered cakes. They are tall and impressive while still being incredibly edible. The strudels are nice when fresh. The small tea cookies by the pound are passable at both places. Best with coffee or tea or to fill a buffet. More for looks / filler than taste. The drop cookies (choc chip, oatmeal raisin, etc.) and bar cookies (brownie, lemon bar) at both Village Sweet and Northside Social are good, but a bit large and pricey for a party platter or spread. The frosted sugar cookies at VS are meh, but way better than Heidelberg. If you want sugar cookies, you have to get them custom made ordered weeks in advance. For a platter of cookies and brownies, Costco and BJs are decent. It’s hard to imagine an event where brownies and choc chip are needed but the cookies also need to be gourmet. BakeShop is known for its macarons and cupcakes - but honestly the basic cupcakes are not spectacularly better at BakeShop or Randolph than the Cherrydale Safeway. I don’t know why, but Cherrydale Safeway is hands down better than any other Giant, Safeway or Harris Teeter in FC or North Arlington. Where BakeShop really shines is for vegan options and specialty cupcake flavors. Northside Social shines for specialty breakfast pastries like Nutella pop tart, flaky pastries, interesting muffin flavors. Village Sweet shines for their quick breads, scones, and quiche / fritattas. An often overlooked option is Good Company doughnuts. Their catering / order ahead options can be odd online - just call and talk to them. For example - Yes sprinkles are a “specialty doughnut”. If you want a whole dozen or more of only choc frosting with rainbow sprinkles for a picky 5yr old’s birthday, call a few days ahead. But all that to say - there are not many good cookie options in FCC/Arlington. |
Neither are good. We don’t have good bakeries in Falls Church. |
really? the cookie I bought there went uneaten at my house - and that never ever happens. DS said they just weren't good. |
I always found that none of the baked goods at Heidelberg had any flavor. I don’t know how they manage to make completely flavorless cookies and cakes. |
