I am yet to meet a single person in the US who was able to take a year long maternity leave, even unpaid. That would have been amazing

It’s very common in teaching. I took 2 yrs with each of mine. Unpaid of course but they held my job.

Yeah I was going to say the only people I know who have done this are teachers.

+1. Wish I could have done this. We were lucky enough to have full-time grandparent support from 8 weeks - 18 months, at which point we added part-time preschool.

My 3 year old is in daycare 9-4:30 and he does fine. Other than more exposure to germs, I don’t think doing full time preschool has caused him to have behavioral issues. Super happy kid.

I actually agree with this and it would have been my choice if I could afford it. However, I couldn't, so both my kids did daycare followed by DCPS Pre-k + aftercare and they are happy, sweet, laid-back kids.

Absolutely not. No educated person would think that.

Any age is fine. Is a fact many children went to daycare as young as 2 months old and now they're fine as adults.

Daycare is Preschool too. Most daycare providers are preschool Teachers. We love our Teacher!
Daycares are Family Child Care homes who gives love and education to the little ones. It's just smaller group. It's your preference.

The cons of centers is that not always the child gets much attention 1:1. Every childcare setting needs more staff. But that's me. Go with your gut, any childcare setting will give love and patience to children

My child got more attention at her center (and was noticeably happer) because it had a better ratio than the in-home we tried. You need to assess each provider individually.

At least for places I looked, preschool follows public school schedule, they have spring break, winter break, summer etc. Summer camp could be separate program but there usually are one week break in June after school ends and August before school starts. Preschool is usually 9-4 following school schedule with before and after care.

Daycare just opens all year around, except holidays (and weather closure), and they are usually 10 hours like 7-5 or 8-6.

I much prefer daycare so that I don't have to worry about so many breaks. But to each's own.

+1

And a lot of preschools are actually only partial day (9-12 or something).

If Nanny is best from age 1 - 2 years of age, what did you do for socialization? I understand its best for kiddos to be around other kids from 1 - 2 years of age.

4 months family daycare, it's been great! Now kindergarten is going very good too. Any age a child can go to a Family Daycare, our Provider was a Preschool teacher too. Her family daycare was great and fun
