Sudden eye floaters??

OP here. Well, it’s good I’m going to the doc because last night when I was driving DD home I noticed these very quick flashes at the top of my vision. They are subtle and lightning fast. So it looks like more than benign floaters. I really hope I don’t have a detachment.

It occurred to me that the opthalmologist I’m seeing today might not be a retina specialist, but hopefully that will be okay because I don’t think I can get a different appointment before the weekend, and I know this is urgent.

My opthamalogist was reassuring that it was just pvd but did send me to a retina specialist as well.

I’m glad you’re going to the doctor. I just returned from visiting my sister who’s recovering from a detached retina. She had no flashes but a sudden onset of very fast floaters.

You get more floaters as you age. My dr explained that they are clumps of cells and gravity will eventually cause them to settle at the very bottom of your eye where you will no longer see them. I also had the flashes for about a year. They have calmed down and now about 80% better. This all comes with aging eyes.

Aging as in 50+?

Maybe look into ocular migraines.

Best of luck.

They don’t need to be a retina specialist to tell if your retina is detaching. A retina specialist would be needed to reattach it if it were , but any ophthalmologist can dilate your pupils and check your retina. Good luck, hopefully it isn’t that!

That’s true. I figured it would be good to see a specialist in case I need emergency surgery, since they could possibly do it right on the spot. I really hope it’s not necessary!

OP I've always had floaters, but now have a ton of floaters due to having a Vitreous Detachment (right at the start of Covid). I had flashing lights and immediately went in to see my eye MD. Nothing they could do for me, but Vitreous detachment is less serious than retina detachment.

I'm fine now, but the amount of floaters in my eyes is ridiculous. I've spoken to my doc about it, nothing I can do but learn to live with them and ignore them.

Pop here. It’s posterior vitreous detachment. No treatment, phew! Thanks for feedback!!

PP here who had the same thing. Do not be alarmed if your floaters get a lot worse, it's normal after something like this. I'm still trying to figure out how to ignore them, it's not easy. ugh.
