Realistically, things will quiet down soon enough. I wouldn't cancel the trip at all. Peru is a big country and protests are common in lots of countries. This is NOT the biggest political crisis to hit Peru in the last few decades.

If you travel there avoid cabs including Ubers, from what I hear from someone who lives there they coordinate with others and will rob you. Tourists are getting scoped out as soon as they land at airport. If you have a family friend/friend living there that’s the best way to travel.
