Walk to School

The whole toutine takes 1.5 hours including going to school. This is for a 7 year old only child. Bath, pack lunch and book bag happens the night before

Why are you doing math and reading before school? What does this mean, exactly?

I have 3, 1st 4th and 5th grade, all at parochial school. We leave at 720. I hate it and would love an 830-3 school day cs 745-230. Anyway... it's not been super consistent because of new baby, etc but what has worked:

-Lunches / water bottles filled night before
- Kitchen/sofa area (small open concept) tidied night before to limit them from getting sidetracked with clutter and toys
- Taking their "breakfast order" night before
- getting up before them, brushing teeth, coffee bra on, etc to not feel half bedraggled myself and waking some kids up by cuddling them in bed, vs shouting "get up!" In their bedrooms

5:45- I wake up and get dressed.
6:00- teen son wakes up and gets dressed.
6:25- I let the dog out and feed her. I make coffee.
6:40- We leave the house. I drop son off at school at 6:55ish.
7:15- I get to school.

They take a shower/bath in the evening. Most of the prep for next day is done before bed.

My kids wake up and are handed a cup of warm milk. After drinking the milk, they use the toilet, and daily grooming - brush teeth, clean tongue, water pik, gargle, wash up, deo, cream, comb hair. They change into fresh clothes and get dressed..

Make their beds. Throw their dirty clothes in the hamper in the hallway. Put any dishes on the tray in the hallway. Empty their waste paper basket in the trash bag hanging on the banister. Quick "Good Morning" to our Gods at the family alter. These tasks may not get done occasionally because they are running late.

Then they come down to eat breakfast. Usually something they can grab and take to the car also if running late. Muffin sandwich with eggs, fruit, water. I usually load their bags, projects, gym stuff, lunch box etc in the car. I also warm the car in winter and we keep pillow and blankets in the car.

We have started doing our prayers in the car. So maybe 6 or 7 minutes of chanting on the road. Then they go to sleep for next 40 minutes under the blankets on their way to school.

My kids know how much time it takes them to do every step of getting ready to leave the house. I also have a wall clock in their bathroom so they know how much time they have.

Our mornings are not chaotic. My kids need around 40 minutes for getting out of the house. But, they can skip everything and be ready in 10 minutes also. That has happened too. It makes for a sucky start of the day for them. 40 minutes works great for them. I facilitate a lot of things and also have stuff ready to go. I wake up around 2 hours before they leave so that I can get dressed, fix breakfast and also do my yoga.

Our mornings are not perfect by any means but things that help. Tooth brushing happens in the kitchen, saves a trip back upstairs. Lunches are packed the night before as are water bottles and backpacks. Clothes are laid out on the dresser the night before for the kids. No screens whatsoever on school day mornings.

Exactly. I teach kindergarten and sometimes first grade. Sometimes kids will fall asleep in the afternoon, especially in KG. But the few students I've had who fall asleep in the morning are very sleep deprived. Most stay up all hours on their tablets. It's very sad that no adult wants to be in charge to take them away so they can get enough sleep. The kids miss tons of instruction because there is no waking them up.

Normally yes but the white noise and rocking of a long commute are the exception

For my family, the key is to have both adults ready before kids wake up. I get up at 5:45 in order to have what I need to get done by 6:30. Lunches and breakfast made the night before.

This has got to be a joke

3 kids - preschool, 1st grader and 3rd grader
6:00 am wake up
Breakfast is some type of protein (egg/bacon/ham) and cereal with milk.
While they eat, they read books or listen to music and I do my own hair and makeup. I shower at nights to save time.
After breakfast, they get dressed, brush teeth and hair, and pack water and homework in backpacks.
We pray for every family member before we leave to school at 7:20 am.

Our children go to bed at 7 pm every night (the older ones may read books quietly in their beds as long as they like). They all wake up without alarms and are generally cheerful.

IME the morning routine starts with bedtime (early) for everyone the night before.

We let the kids wake up on their own. One gets up around 7 and the other around 7:30. They change into their clothes the night before after showering, so they just get up and come to the kitchen (this was their choice — I thought it was cute when they wore PJs but they like the ease of not having to get dressed in the morning). They drink water, take vitamins, eat and brush teeth. Sometimes they eat part of breakfast in the car.

While they’re eating we warm up lunches packed the night before and put them in their thermoses. Pack water bottles, snacks, and lunches. Their backpacks, shoes, coats, etc. are laid out the night before at the door. Off to school at 8 AM.

NP. No. If your kid falls asleep while you’re driving it’s because they are tired. Elementary school kids still need 10-11 hours a night. Also, if you have to wake them up and they don’t get up themselves, they need more sleep. My parents were not strict with bedtimes and I was chronically sleep deprived as a result.
