Clothes for me??

I wanted to give a bump to this old thread, because now that I'm finally back in my old size (yippee!) and realized that since I haven't bought new clothes since before my 2 pregnancies everything I have is hopelessly out-of-style. I'm searching for new ideas to get out of the Ann Taylor, J. Crew, Bananana Repub rut, esp. for work (bus. casual).

Agree it's hard to get out of the same ole' rut as far as stores go. For work I do A LOT of AT Loft (used to be the regular AT - but I don't like it as much as I used to) and for casual, I have a lot of clothes from Lucy now. I love that store. Cute t-shirts and comfy pants that look good.

I NEED this thread!! It's getting harder and harder to find well-made, flattering clothes that aren't $75 for a simple button-down blouse, or aren't covered in dorky appliqué.

I'd be interested in high-quality second-hand stores, too, if anyone knows of any in the District.

In Bethesda: http://www.washingtonian.com/blogarticles/Arts%20&%20Events/afterhours/7564.html

Stop#3: Second Chance Boutique
4920 Fairmont Avenue; 301-652-6606
Tuesday through Saturday 10 to 5, Sunday noon to 4

The scoop: This high-end consignment shop is stocked with designer labels—from Manolo Blahnik to Chanel—but it’s definitely not for the faint of wallet.

Best for: Those who like their designer finds at a relative discount. We spotted a Yohji Yamamoto tuxedo coat ($800), a Marc Jacobs shirtdress ($180) and a pair of Salvatore Ferragamo evening heels ($100).

We left with: Nothing—this time. But we’re seriously thinking of returning to splurge on a vintage Yves Saint Laurent black sheath with a white Peter Pan collar and crisp cuffs ($400).

It may sound old-school, but I've had good luck at Macy's lately. They seem to be carrying a wider range of clothes and I think their in-house Inc. brand is pretty stylish and cute, plus it comes in petites for us short women. Coupons abound for those with a Macy's credit card -- I'm always getting 20% off cards and $10 off of $50 purchase cards in the mail.

I've also noticed that Macy's and Lord & Taylor seem to be carrying cute clothes lately!

I would also recommend Loehmann's. If you are into designer jeans, they do have a nice selection.

For tops, there is a label called Ninety I like. I bought some really cute Ninety tops at Loehmann's and Ross.

Depending on your style, I also like some of the Macy's Charter Club brand.

I agree with most of the suggestions of PPs. I'd add Bloomingdale's in Friendship Heights and for catalogue/online, Boden. Bloomie's has a offers a wide range in various prices and almost always seems to be having a sale.

Kohl's has some cute tops.

I LOVE White House Black Market ... but obviously not your place if you like lots of color. High quality, everything mixes and matches, and they frequently have promotions (and as a "Black Book" member, I get lots of little perks). You can look young and hip or older and more professional - they have the whole range.

This is my biggest problem lately! I don't want to wear Juniors but I don't want to be frumpy either. Banana is a little too plain, plus their sizing is out of control at this point--- seems like everything there is so big. AT Loft blah. Gap Blah. It seems like the most logical step would be designer stuff but with two kids, it doesn't make much sense for me to spend that kind of money.

Check out Boden http://www.bodenusa.com/

I purchased a bag there last season and got a bunch of comments on it. The thing I really liked about the website was all the reviews gave me a good perspective on the product. Be careful with sizing!

I just saw that the District Sample Sale tickets went on sale this week--and that Ginger is in, which is my favorite new store if I could only afford it. I'm going to try it out--I'll post back after! The website is www.districtsamplesale.com if anyone wants to join me.

I get a few basics and ALWAYS wear unique jewlery. I think interesting necklaces, earings, and bracelets go a long way. I am constantly being complemented on my "look" when half the time I'm just in jeans and a fitted tee. You really can look put together and cute with the right accessories.

Its kind of like living room furniture, you can have a plain sofa and loveseat, but all of the style is in the rug, artwork, and lamps.
