I have 3 in private school, and I agree with this 100%. If I had to choose, I would prioritize having a nice home in a good neighborhood with good public schools nearby. |
Normal modest house and private for high school. |
definitely go with the better house/neighborhood in the good public school district. whitman is just as good as many private schools so it really is a win win. |
The house will get paid off. Private school tuition is gone forever. That said, we do private because the public schools have gone woke/loony. For us, the tuition is nbd. I’d probably feel differently if the tuition were a bigger part of our family’s financial pie.

+1 and what happens if your income status changes? We had the same dilemma when our HHI was about $400K. But, we thought about what would happen if one of us couldn't work. We would have to pull the kid out of private and send them to the local public. I felt it was too risky for us. It could happen at any time.. ES, MS or HS, Ker or senior in HS. That would be awful if we had to pull out when DC was as senior. And PP is right.. your house is an investment. The equity you are building can be part of your retirement. Private school doesn't necessarily build equity for your kid. Your kid could end up the same going to public as a private. |
Ditto. But I will add in our case it isn’t about diversity but rather not liking that our pyramid ends with a HS with MS13 issues. Hence we are #2 of what OP was asking. |
