Tuition Increases

It has nothing to do with expenses or inflation. The schools could likely fill every seat at $70K/yr. and the increases are inline with what the other schools are doing.

Nothing more than Econ. 101.

You are right, of course. Rich people will pay. But they should remove any rhetoric about diversity from their websites and curricula because, at those prices, there is no real diversity.

And there was so much diversity at 40k/yr

Meanwhile - I have a senior and am wondering how much inflation is going to slam us for college tuition increases next year (and beyond).

When my kids started, tuition was in the high twenty thousand range and then they ended, it was at 50k.

Oh my! That is an unknown/unconsidered/underappreciated reality for those families seeking entrance into K-12.

Parents who aren’t thinking about the long term cost are not very smart. I think people prefer not to think about it, but I can’t imagine people really don’t know.

We have four kids in independent schools. When we enrolled the first one I did the math on what we could expect for high school tuition to be for the last one and how much it would cumulatively cost.

This is obnoxious (perhaps not unexpectedly from this board). First, "thinking about the long term cost" is likely what most do to some extent, but that is not what I was referring to. New parents, unfamiliar with independent schools and outside of the DC/Potomac bubble, are not going to widely anticipate that tuition will DOUBLE by the end. That is not a reasonable/common expectation, even if "thinking long term" and assuming some tuition increases. It has nothing to do with being "smart".

Agree that the expectation that you’ll pay “more” is a long way from knowing that you’ll be paying double. When I was writing $25,000 checks for kindergarten & 1st grade, it seemed expensive, but worthwhile. The increase is compounded because you have higher tuition at each level (middle school/HS) that is then increased by a given % each year. Even when you can afford it, writing a $50,000 check is *painful.*

Not that far away I'm afraid.

It's legalized robbery, and we parents are of course complicit.
