Colgate ED

Academics do seem to be comparable and Union has stronger stem. But because Union doesn’t have as much name recognition outside the northeast, it’s easier to get into and caliber of students might be slightly less. Both are great schools though.

My kid and kid’s spouse both went to Union. Both are incredibly successful in their careers. While I’m sure other’s experiences may vary, we have no regrets whatsoever with Union.

No news then?

DD's portal page went from "received and processed" to blank today. Perhaps tonight?

They usually come on the 13th at an unusual time like 7:13 or 8:13pm. 13 is considered a lucky number at Colgate.

DS got in to Colgate. We are so thrilled for him. His GPA was lower than what Naviance showed for admits from his school but he had strong extracurriculars (captain of several varsity sports) and recommendations. We are also full pay and acknowledge this gave him a distinct advantage. No other hook.

Congratulations to him! Mind if I ask: did he submit test scores? If so, what were they?

He had a 34. ACT scores were on the higher side for Colgate. His GPA is a 3.6 and at his private 3.7 seemed to be the cutoff for Naviance.

DD was rejected. 1450 SAT; 3.6uw GPA with rigorous courses (this is likely the issue); varsity sport captain, youth sport coach and three consistent community service activities. Wonder if a legacy with similar credentials would have made the cut?

PP - so sorry about your daughter. It's never easy for kids to get this news. Do you mind my asking if your DD was at a private or public? Were you requesting FA? Just trying to see the scenario that may play out for our kid for next year who has similar grades.

3.6 is not a low GPA for a private school...hard to make sense of any of these decisions. The stats are not always the answer so I would be careful reading too much into those.

I was coming on to say this - they released at 7:13 on 12/13.

This rejection might be due to something expressed in a teacher's recommendation or by the student in an application essay.

Not saying this is PP’s daughter’s situation at all, but I know there was a kid at my DC’s school who was rejected ED and it was a huge surprise (top grades, rigor, top test scores). Turns out, his essay was on a very controversial subject and probably came off as misogynistic. He also had created a college email account with a very questionable email address. My point is it really is not just stats.

A 3.6 from a private and full pay not getting into Colgate is very surprising. I think it will be very difficult for my MoCo senior with a 4.2 weighted and 33 ACT to get in ED2 (we are full pay also). Any thoughts from people? Any stats people can share for the public school kids who may have gotten in last night?
