Can we talk hotel tipping?

Most of the hotels I’ve stayed at since Covid still haven’t returned to daily housekeeping, so definitely no tipping in that case.

Goodness. How long has it been since you worked at this hotel?

I do $3-5 for the valet when picking up my car. $5/day for housekeeping (left daily).

I’ve stopped tipping too. What’s the point? It’s not like there is quality service being provided. At least not at a $600/night or below price point in my experience in recent years. And if I’m spending $1000/night, I expect the property to appropriately compensate its staff.

Bellhop $5, housekeeping is $20-$30 a night but mostly there are no housekeeping services during a long stay. We have to request it.

I stay at places that indicate no tipping

We always get a wheeled cart and do it ourselves. Someone arranges a cab for you, $10, unless it's a big ask, then $20. Housekeeping $20/nt but $100 for a week would be my max, for a week. We don't desire housekeeping during our stay, even if offered, and we leave the place very neat.

By valet I mean the guy who takes and brings your car.

Wow, ok I guess I’m out of touch. Hasn’t thought to do $20/day for housekeeping.

I must be out of touch as well. I tipped $5/day at a mid priced hotel. I make my bed every day and hang up towel. So maybe they emptied the trash? Not sure what else they did in the room each day. If the front desk calls me a cab, I don’t tip. If the doorman hails a cab for me from the street, I would tip a few dollars. More if it was raining or snowing and they were able to get the cab quickly.

Same.

But in his scenario, the hotel is charging $2000 and there is no housekeeping during his stay.

So at that price point, the management should be paying more than minimum wage. And he isn't getting the room serviced at all during the stay, so why tip daily?

What hotel brand says no tipping?

And, forgetting colds and flu are surfaces, covid is airborne. For a maid to miss a week of work is a big deal. For what that poster spends a night, the housekeeper may make $1K to $1500 a month.

There are plenty of low wage workers
Hotels are in a position to pay salaries
Rather donate to a charity that actually does help people
Salaried workers are doing ok

Yet most hotels don’t. If you don’t need to be cheap don’t be and tip. You’re lack of tipping isn’t changing the industry.

Wow. $20-30 a night for housekeeping when it should be included in the price of your stay? I don’t know anyone who does that much; maybe $25 or so for a week. Tipping seems out of control to me.

You are not being cheap if you pay $2k a night for a hotel room
At that price the tip is already included

$0 in tips.

It's not my responsibility to pay employees' salaries and livable wages. The hotel should be doing that. If the employees don't like the wages offered, they can find another job. I will not be tipped to death. It's also a giant pain in the ass expectation from staff if you have to travel on business. You're not there for vacation. Very rarely do many organizations give you free cash to spend. You have to pay for everything with a credit card, which means you can't tip anyway even if you wanted to. I sure as hell am not going to use my own personal money to tip while on a business trip they I am forced to be on.
