Elrich protesting outside of Amazon Fresh

A County Executive should be working directly with Amazon Fresh to work out incentives to increase hourly wages above the starting $15.75/hour. But he just nasty tweets instead and looks like a doofus joining in on a mini street protest.

I agree the protest is a bit tone deaf and cherry picking which company to protest for publicity (Whole Foods is owned by Bezos, other companies treat employees badly in different ways). But I don't think the county should be giving Amazon incentives to pay its workers more that minimum wage. Bezos is one of the richest (the richest?) people on earth, he does not need more handouts.

This is why I voted for Elrich. Because I want him to ruin this county.

Eh, come on, is Amazon really a neighbor any of us want?

They wouldn’t have put up a store otherwise.

Do you really think Amazon’s store is going to treat its employees worse than Giant/Safeway/etc. do?

This is sort of like people screaming about Walmart while shopping at Target...

Amazon already has a long track record of treating its employees fairly badly. So ... yes, I do think they probably will treat employees there worse than at unionized stores like Giant.

Why go out of your way to protest a new Amazon Fresh that’s not in your neighborhood when at any time in the last decade they could have protested Amazons treatment of workers at the Whole Foods in downtown Silver Spring just a few blocks from where they live?

If people want to claim principles, at least be consistent.

I mean, I'm not protesting anywhere, I'm just saying there's no particular reason to give Amazon the benefit of the doubt.

Seems a little bit late for that, no? Like a decade late if they were concerned about Amazon subsidiary retail workers.

Good point.

Target isn’t great, but it treats its workers better than Walmart.

Citation? I know that's the progressive party line, because I live among 100% progressives, but no one has ever, ever been able to point to an objective measure of this statement.

I love the Amazon Fresh store. Easy to check out and get what you need but the pizza guy at the new Chevy Chase store sucks and often refuses to make pizza. It gives people jobs... that's a good thing. That's terrible he is protesting. No wonder businesses don't want to come here.

Amazon Prime has a reputation for treating employees badly. However, Amazon has multiple companies and often its like anywhere else you work and its hit or miss depending on the manager.

Ok, so if Amazon Fresh closes down, what happens to the people who work there? Oh, let me guess.. he wants rich taxpayers to provide welfare for them.

And they should. Because they’re the ones that elected Elrich in the first place.

Of course! Amazon is killing unions. Supermarket jobs at places like Giant, Safeway, etc are unionised and provide a pathway to the middle class.

Unions are only good for some. I worked a government union job. We all had issues with our supervisors and they completely blew us off. Paying dues for no support was a joke. Unions are businesses.. it's not like it used to be way back when.

Amazon pays well compared to other businesses. The real issue is they pay better and offer benefits so other businesses cannot complete with them.

They make $38,000 to $57,000 a year, depending on length of service. They are a grade 8. They get full benefits.
