Does kid need all As to get into Sidwell

No, you don't need straight A's, but the applicant will be able to demonstrate they can both handle the workload and enjoy handling the workload.

And honestly, they should. I would not send an A/B student there. In my experience it's a challenge even for a kids who previously got very high As in public---and there's nothing worse than being in a school that's a bad fit.
It's just makes for an unhappy kid and there are lots of unhappy kids at the Big3 schools because they're overwhelmed by the workload in high school. They're really only a great fit for kids who love to work hard and put themselves to the academic limit.

Agreed. Sidwell is designed for strong students. Know your child.

It sounds absolutely miserable. I am stressed just thinking about it. Why does anyone want to go?

Middle school parent here - tonight’s homework included an English writing assignment (multiple parts), a Math worksheet, Science reading and questions, History writing assignment, no foreign language tonight. Some assignments were started in class. It took my child about 2 hours with breaks to finish.

Some kids really thrive on it. It isn't for everyone. There are a ton of great schools in the area.

Also, the kids are incredibly prepared for college, like to the point that for most of them, college is easier.

I’m surprised they don’t have a higher rate of kids leaving the school. How do they determine at 5 if this is the type of kid that would thrive on 2-3 hours of homework a night in middle school??

I have heard people say the whole college is easier line many times with regard to these schools and it is such a head scratcher to me. Is this a goal? Why would anyone want college to be easier? An education should build not peak in high school!

+1 full pay is a baseline, not a hook/plus

It’s easy for the first semester or two. After that everyone catches up and the classes start to get more demanding. Funny thing most of the privates will do the same thing but with a better life work balance. There is a reason high school is not college.

It’s coming. High school at GDS is 3-4 hours a night. They are very proud of this fact and tell all prospective high school students and their parents.

Agree.

So many ways to skin a cat and learn a lot, be challenged, find a great college & career track. Why do this for high school….

That’s unnecessary. Better maximize life experiences than over studying at home.

Prob because someone convinced you not to sit for any AP tests so you get to take those classes a second time for fresh and sophomore year.
