Harry ages in real time in the books. Once this decision was made and his age was set in The Black Echo, it was always headed this way.

I disagree with this. Connelly can just stop writing Bosch books, or just include him in little cameo bits in Renee Ballard's novels (or the series I suspect he'll start with Maddie). He can even kill Bosch (didn't he kill his reporter main character - I may be misremembering that but I think so), but he doesn't have to have this long, lingering illness and slow death.
