Video introduction!

I know Bowdoin has a version as well. They are adamant that it does not tip the scales--they said it's just fun for them to see the person behind all the paperwork, and they really enjoy it.

My kid did it a couple years ago for UChicago (she's there, now). She just explained a small project she was doing with a local store. It was a food drive, but it stayed small, and she wanted to explain why it was different and why it was not some grandiose thing.

And it was just done at our dining room table and shot with an iPhone. Doesn't have to be 2 minutes.

I know other UChicago admits who did not do the video.

Also, btw, she did ED, however; we had a little trouble uploading the video (or maybe it was optional art prints, which she also wanted uploaded) and so emailed her local rep who said it was fine to get it in a little later.

My kid had to do it for Brown. It feels over the top. But maybe it does give them a good idea of what the kid is really like. Wonder if it favors the good looking ones....

DS didn’t do it for Chicago last year. Admitted anyway.

I recall the UChicago applicants who do it is under 50% (recalling from a couple years ago)

My kid did it herself with her iphone. I was frankly a little embarrassed by what she sent (it was definitely about who she was and her interests, but they seemed pretty juvenile (loves coffee, friends, attending protests). She was admitted and I told her it was in spite of what she submitted.

She showed me many examples of kids who definitely had help (possibly paid videographers). VERY well done-- both in content and style. I think if you google them, you'll find them on youtube as people are proud enough to post them.

I took from this that perhaps they are serious that they just want to get to know you and those other kids didn't have any advantage from the slickness of their submission.

Definitely benefits kids with fancy editing equipment/skills or who can hire a filmmaker to do this for them. And yes most kids I know hire this out to someone for sports recruiting.

Oh please. My kid last cycle did his intro video on his iphone. Certainly had no fancy equipment or editing skills.

Yeah. Mine did hers on her Samsung phone and just cut clios together. It was nit high tech or fancy and even featured her knitting and talking about being a tea loving little old lady. Success!

This is interesting...my kid feels like it is mandatory...

11:02 again. I think those professionally done videos would backfire--unless your kid was applying as a filmmaker.

I think the handheld iphone is the way to go. They are hoping for genuine, not doctored
