That's the line that caught my attention too - attended elementary and middle schools ranked among Virginia's best Bottom line: High density aka missing middle hurts everyone's standard of living. "Missing Middle" isn't going to create affordable housing for those who need it. It's just going to generate revenue for developers and the Supervisors in bed with them. |
| These "affordable housing" advocates don't want anything in their backyard, either. They only want development in YOUR backyard. As it turns out, Arlington is not the only county in Virginia. |
Oh snap. There's definitely some relation. It's not that common a last name. |
Ahem, Washington Monthly. |

For many of the very NIMBYs who bought their houses when they were more affordable, it’s their own children or grandchildren who are now priced out, because the neighborhood has, above all, gotten more expensive.
Hello, hello! Self awareness?? Are you there? |
Millennials don't want to put their families in 6 or 8 plexes. They want a SFH, preferably a detached SFH. |
| I’m not opposed to duplexes, townhouses, etc. I live in a TH! However, I am very wary of how the county is refusing to acknowledge the impact on schools and recreational capacity that will result from changing the code county wide. Their stance is basically that we have plenty of school space and parks and rec space already and it will be fine. Anyone that has ever tried to sign up for a county class or summer camp or participate in a sport knows that there is already a shortage and adding new housing geared to families is not going to help. |
| You guys are better investigative journalists than the "pros" |
Yea, well, we’re here to judge the author of the article, not to debate the merits of her position. |

This is a perfect example of how developers who stand to benefit greatly from MM have used people like this writer as pawns to achieve their goals. And of course, 20-somethings who chose low-paying career paths are so gullible as to buy into the narrative that they deserve to be able to buy a cheap duplex or 4-plex in Arlington.
Sorry, but I went to a top-five professional school (taking out six figures of debt to do so) and had a high-paying job at age 25, and even I didn't think I was entitled to anything. I saved and busted my butt to be able to afford to buy. Work hard, stop spending your money on stupid frivolous crap, and maybe you'll be able to actually afford the property you want someday -- but don't be seduced by the snake oil salesmen peddling this MM crap. Their goal is to make developers rich, not to build affordable housing for journalism majors. |
