S|O: Separating art from the artist

To me, it doesn't matter that it was legal for an adult to marry a 13 yr old. Nobody sane could have thought that was a good idea, or healthy for the girl.

Tupac is dead and has been for decades. You aren’t monetarily supporting him.

Yes, I'm very aware of when he died, thank you. My mother called to tell me he'd been shot. I've disliked Kanye since I knew of him. I must have seen something in him from the very beginning. I've never bought any of his stuff.

Drug and rape women? Not interested in ever watching your show again.

Going "death con 3 on the Jews"? No longer interested in what you're selling.

Be a b/tch to a waitress over an omelette? I don't care. You're still funny.

Sorry, but I won’t denigrate the importance of the Cosby Show and what the entire cast brought to it. Critics have written about the pivotal role the show had in essentially humanizing black people at a time when most of America really wasn’t fully integrated. Back then, the demographics of most communities simply didn’t have a lot of black people, and you rarely saw black families portrayed well on tv.

Kanye’s shoes are different imho. First, shoes and hoodies aren’t art. I’m not familiar with his music, so I can’t weigh in.

And James Corden was never funny. He’s just a jerk.

The Cosby Show will forever be linked to the image of a woman waking up with Cosby's cum all over her. If he wanted to do all that good work for the black community then he shouldn't have drugged and raped women.

One thing has nothing to do with the other. If all you can think about when you watch the Cosby Show is his cum, that’s a YOU problem.

If you can watch The Cosby Show without thinking of a witness saying under oath that she came to consciousness covered in his cum, then that's a YOU problem.

Do you think you might feel differently had you not watched/followed the trial?

I didn’t watch/follow the trial. I periodically saw headlines/read articles, and I quickly concluded he was a monster.

I didn’t feel compelled to watch his victims relive their nightmare on tv. Seems wrong to gawk at someone’s trauma.

For due diligence, should we be running background checks on artists before we form opinions of their works?

It’s not a problem at all, actually.

Reminds me of this

I liked some of R. Kelly’s music but feel now that his songs are somehow tainted.
Same thing w/Kanye West.

I likely would not watch a Woody Allen movie today and I think James Corden acted like an entitled jerk for his treatment of a wait staff.
Glad he got called out for it.

All people should.

the remix to Ignition is no less of a bop just because R Kelly is a s***bag

Did you know about the scandals surrounding Mother Theresa?

I'm trying to think of what dirt could be dug up concerning me. I peed in a hot tub once. Pretty gross and embarrassing but Mother Theresa did a lot worse.

There is a correlation between fame and poor behavior.

Of course we've all done embarrassing things, but there's a big difference between raping someone you've drugged, having sex with children and being rude to a waitress. Huge difference. I can think someone is a jerk and still like their work. But I can't get past the pedophiles and rapists. Sorry, no.

But dying on the James Corden hill. Hilarious.

I only saw bits and pieces on the news. I didn't specifically follow the trial. Seeing his face makes me think of the woman saying she woke up sticky. So nasty. His face just looks disgusting to me now. I would not enjoy seeing him in anything.

What's hilarious? That there's a big difference between sex with children and complaining about an omelet?

“Separate” is the problem for me. I can listen to Chris Brown but every time, I do remember he beat Rihanna and left her for dead. You have to take the artist WITH their art, not ignore their misdeeds.

Picasso was a known misogynist who painted himself raping women and was known to be a lying, cheating abusive man. Does that mean we stop admiring his paintings?

It means we include his bad conduct in our discussion of his paintings. Not that we bonfire them.
