I used to be a fan of family YouTube vlogs until I realized how exploitative they were.
The only one I've found that isn't exploitative is the local one for the Donnelly family. They don't seem to use their kids for views or to get $$. That's the only one I still watch from time to time. I used to be a fan of This is how we Bingham on YT until I realized the absolute toxic masculinity that they were teaching their boys. "An absolute stud" is something that dad always says about his sons. It's creepy/weird now. I was also a fan of 8Passengers but holy sh!t has that family imploded. They are LDS. They sent 1 kid away to a behavior camp, mom is now in a cult, dad & the behavior camp kid have moved out, kids have to earn xmas gifts & the 2 youngest didn't this past year, so they had to sit and watch all their siblings open gifts and celebrate; the mom took away the one son's bed and bedroom because he pulled a prank on his younger sibling... just a hot mess of a family now. They no longer vlog and haven't in years but it doesn't align with the teaching of the new cult the mom is in, but yet she doesn't take down the videos because you know, money. |
When did you start watching them? I genuinely think that when they first started a lot of it was really innocent. With LDS ones in particular a lot of it was to create fun ways of remembering family times, like a modern scrapbook, and keep in touch with relatives. But it really didn’t take long for things to get toxic. Money messes people up. |
| I think of this all the time. It’s really sad to see how many parents exploit their kids on social media. Even having a public profile as a non influencer seems stupid. |
Oh the Donnelly family is horribly exploitive. They keep pushing Young Life in the last five or six months, and they are pushing it HARD. They have crosses featured all over their homes and have their kids wearing cross necklaces. They used to focus on the girl all the time, and when she'd whine or act spoiled she NEVER got shut down or punished, they just laughed and kept filming. Now two of the three kids are off at college, so they claim they're pivoting their brand to sell stuff (homegoods, I think?). |
| My young kid wrote up a contract saying that I couldn't mention him on facebook or other places. I hadn't and never did. You wouldn't know I have kids from my facebook page. I find friends' postings on social media cringe-worthy, and eventually you see their kids disappear from posts as the kids finally voice their opposition. |
| Frankly I don't think child actors should be allowed. It is so damaging to most of them. A 10 year old can't work at a restaurant or a landscaping company but they can work in tv and movies? It doesn't make sense and doesn't put the best interest of the kids at the fore. |
