| Anything by Liane Moriarty. SO entertaining and way better written than they need to be. |

All of these were fun, upbeat, and easy to read, but also had depth, too.
The Unsinkable Greta James, by Jennifer Smith One to Watch, by Kate Staymon-London On Rotation, by Shirlene Obuobi Funny You Should Ask, by Elissa Sussman Very Sincerely Yours, by Kerry Winfrey |

House in the Cerulean Sea
Remarkably Bright Creatures Both were delightful IMO |
Also by Deanna Raybourn. She's probably my new favorite author. She's got a great sense of humor. |
| I recently read Project Hail Mary by Andy Wehr and really liked it. Uplifting, yes (IMO). Easy to read (yes, overall, although your brain has to work a bit because there is some interesting science and math in there). |
Uh… so what’s a romp? |
I agree with both of these. I'd add The Guncle, True Biz and One to Watch. |
| To me, a romp is something fun and entertaining to read. I think there are some sad or angsty books being recommended here that I wouldn't call romps. |
Like you feel as though you’ve done a thing. And the thing got your happy chemicals flowing. Maybe a fun and exhilarating lighthearted thing. Or a joyful experience where some things happened and you feel all endorphiny about it in nice way. Nothing too heavy. |
OP said "I’m looking for some fun books to read. I don’t care if they have literary merit and am not interested in an emotional journey." To me Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow is about an emotional journey and while it's enjoyable to read I think that's due more to its literary merit than it being "fun"". Murderbot is definitely fun. |

The Blacksmith Queen by GA Aiken. It’s a fantasy romance with a road trip. All the characters are over the top. She has a distinctive writing style, so I would read a sample or check out from the library before you buy.
Also, When a Scot Ties the Knot by Tessa Dare. The heroine makes up a suitor and writes letters to him to avoid marriage. Years later he shows up, much to her shock. She’s a scientific illustrator and one of the plot points is her waiting for lobsters to mate so she can draw them…. |

Linda Holmes of NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour wrote two fun, light novels set in small-town Maine:
