| Why risk it? |
| This is OP. Made the walk and it is beyond silly/ embarrassing that I even asked. 100% not an issue. Weather was nice and felt great to be out there. |
M ST SW is a moderately high crime area and crime is lower as you approach the Mall. The highest crime areas in DC are around Thomas Circle, U Street and Shaw. |
Actually not silly to ask, OP. Several years ago a visiting family member was almost robbed on the Mall after dark by a group of teens. I'm a DC native and didn't think twice about being there until I witnessed that and intervened to stop it, but in retrospect, it can be pretty desolate. |
| glad that you did the walk, OP! I live in Southwest and while there is occasional crime in the neighborhood, the Mall and Wharf are both heavily policed and have lower crime than many other parts of DC. In case people find this thread in the future, 4th St, 7th St, and Banneker overlook (by the Spy Museum) with steps down to the Wharf are all good ways to get between the Mall and the Wharf. Like anywhere, it's important to be aware of your surroundings (wearing headphones is unhelpful for this). Also be very careful at intersections--there's a lot of traffic and bad drivers around here, and that risk seems higher to me than violent crime. |
HI OP, I live near the Wharf and quite frankly didn’t know what to say to your question after reading the responses. This is a vibrant neighborhood with friendly neighbors for the most part and has crime issues just like the rest of the City. Glad you decided for yourself and reported back to let others know your thoughts. |
Can you define vibrant? I keep seeing it used and have no idea what it’s supposed to mean. How is your neighborhood more or less vibrant than another neighborhood in DC? |
DC's a hard city to live in when you're afraid of half the population. |
